MA Literacy and ESL

Important Notice

As of spring 2015, we are no longer accepting new applications for this program. Review our list of degrees for another program within this college.

The 35-credit M.A.in Literacy and English as a Second Language program offers teachers the skills and knowledge to not only understand the process of second language acquisition, especially the acquisition of English, but also the specific skills needed to promote the academic and literacy development so often missing for English language learners. The master’s degree leads to Wisconsin Reading Teacher (316) and ESL (395) certifications.

Teachers will gain the skills they need to facilitate the success of culturally and linguistically diverse learners and the knowledge to work collaboratively with other staff in an effort to facilitate such success across the school environment. The design of the program allows candidates to examine research and best practice within the context of their daily work with students.

Standards from the International Reading Association, Common Core, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Mission Statement of Stritch and the College of Education and Leadership guide the curriculum and instruction for the department.
