Program Format
Master of Arts (M.A.) in Special Education (Extended Certification)
Certification courses are offered in the evening in a year-round
format and utilize a cohort model. The certification portion of the
program consists of 27-35 credits, depending on courses previously
completed for initial certification, and includes student teaching. The
student teaching may be either on-the-job or through a Stritch
placement. Students will complete the coursework and student teaching in
approximately 12-18 months. The optional master’s degree courses are
typically completed after a student secures a teaching position.
In addition to coursework, students are required to complete 100
hours of field experiences in an elementary, middle, or high school
setting during regular school hours. Schools in area districts will be
used for field experiences and student teaching placements.
