Certification/Degree Requirements

Master of Arts (M.A.) in Special Education (Extended Certification - Online Format)


To be eligible for Wisconsin teacher certification in Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence or Early Adolescence-Adolescence Cross Categorical Special Education, you must meet all of these program requirements:

  • Certification coursework totaling 28 credits in Stritch’s MA in Special Education online program
  • Student teaching experience, included in the 28 credits of certification coursework
  • Passing score on Praxis II test #0146/5146 Middle School: Content Knowledge (due prior to student teaching)
  • Passing score on the Foundations of Reading Test(due prior to student teaching)

INED 502 - Special Education Curriculum & Methods I - 3 cr

INED 504 - Special Education Curriculum & Methods II- Functional Needs - 3 cr

INED 508 - Individual Assessment & Diagnosis - 3 cr

INED 520 - Inclusive Education MC-EA Field Experience III - 1 cr

INED 530 - Behavior Interventions - 2 cr

INED 532 – Transition - 1 cr

INED 534 - Autism/Related Communication Needs - 2 cr

INED 536 - Individual Education Plans - 1 cr

INED 511 - Early Literacy Development - 3 cr

INED 512 – Advanced Theories and Methods of Literacy Development - 3 cr

SEDU 520 - Portfolio Seminar - 1 cr

SED 505 - Portfolio II - 0 cr

SED 550 OR 555 - Cross Categorical Student Teaching: MC-EA or EA-A - 3 cr

INED 604 - Professional Development Seminar - 2 cr

Total credits for certification: 28 credits        

Requirements for Graduation with Master's Degree

To qualify for graduation from the M.A. in Special Education degree, you must also have:

  • Earned the 28 credits required for certification, along with the eight credits listed below, within seven consecutive academic years
  • A minimum overall grade point average of 3.0, with no individual grade below a B-

Required Courses for Master's Degree Completion

  • CED 549 Technology-Based Research and Statistics, 3 credits
  • EDM 624 Research Methodology, 3 credits
  • EDM 634 Action Research Application, 2 credits
