Certification and Degree Requirements

Master of Arts in Urban Special Education


Requirements for Certification only:

  • Complete all courses required for licensure

                         o   MUE 512 Language, Literacy, and Learning

                         o   MUE 515 Building Classroom Communities

                         o   MUE 513 Field Experiences in Special Education Settings

                         o   MUE 525 Supporting Individual Student Needs

                         o   MUE 518 Social Studies for Special Educators

                         o   MUE 535 Advocacy

                         o   MUE 506 Assessment and Instruction in Science

                         o   MUE 555 Collaborating with Families and Communities

                         o   MUE 545 Supporting Students in the School Environment

                         o   MUE 533 Field Experience in Special Education Settings

                         o   MUE 565 Formal and Informal Assessment

                         o   MUE 521 Math Methods for Special Educators

                         o   MUE 543 Student Teaching

  • Pass Praxis I. A passing score within the past 5 years on the ACT, SAT or GRE can be accepted in place of the Praxis I.
  • Pass Praxis II- Middle School Content (0146 or 5146) prior to student teaching
  • Pass the Wisconsin State Foundations of Reading Test prior to student teaching
  • Complete and pass a semester of student teaching.
  • Successfully complete a professional portfolio
  • Complete the Wisconsin Licensure Teacher Performance Assessment for students applying for licensure on or after August 2016.

Requirement for Graduation with Master’s Degree:

  • Complete Master’s coursework with a 3.0 overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Master’s coursework includes the courses required for certification, plus the following three additional courses:

                         o   MUE 549 Statistics

                         o   MUE 606 Introduction to Research

                         o   MUE 630 Assessment and Instruction in Literacy

  • Complete and pass a semester of student teaching.
  • Successfully complete a professional portfolio
  • Complete and present in writing and in an oral presentation case study research
