Biology Overview

Students in Stritch's Biology Department think logically and analytically in the study of living things. Biology is the study of living things and the interactions between them.

Knowledge of biological principles helps a student think analytically and logically and aids in the ability to make informed and responsible decisions.

The major objectives of the Biology Department are to provide a basis for a liberal arts education and to prepare students to pursue careers in research, teaching, industry or medicine.

Since biology is based on mathematics and the physical sciences, students need to be well grounded in these areas. For this reason, majors are encouraged to take additional math, chemistry and physics courses beyond the required minimum.

Students preparing for graduate school or a career in industry or research are encouraged to take Analytical Chemistry (CH 307), Biochemistry (CH 302), General Physics (PY 201, 202) and Mathematics through Calculus (MT 210, 211).
