“My main goal in teaching is to give students the communication skills they need to make this world a better place. Communication is what makes positive change possible at work, home, and in our communities. Almost everything in life is negotiated through oral, written, and visual messages, so students who learn to build messages based on truth and sound evidence can be successful in any vocation and/or leadership post they pursue.

“I bring real-world professional experiences and connections to the classroom, so my expectations are high. I know the competition students face upon graduation. Students need to be memorable in the eyes of everyone they meet. That’s why we work hard in my classroom, but the benefits are oh so worth it.”

“My goal is to co-create with the students a community of mutual learning and teaching within the classroom. This community is characterized by inclusivity, commitment, consensus building, realism, contemplation, safety, graceful fighting, shared leadership, and spirit. I want students to see themselves as both actor and reactor and understand that their communication has the potential to enrich or diminish each situation, relationship, and community in which they find themselves.

"I am constantly reflecting upon my communication and challenging myself to learn from each encounter. I want the students to do the same. The ultimate goal is for us all to become intentional, mindful communicators, who use our wisdom, skill-sets, and creativity to make the world better -- one interpersonal interaction, relationship, family, and community at a time.”

“As a journalist, I learned to never bury the lead. So here goes. I teach what you need to know in order to get a job in today’s world of broadcast/multimedia journalism. My students get jobs because they are very well prepared, whether they’re working in a television newsroom or producing multimedia messages for a client, company or institution.

“You’ll quickly learn that I’m very passionate about producing good stories in an accurate, ethical, interesting, and contemporary way. You’ll learn that I’m committed to getting it right and teaching students to do the same. I’m also committed to creating an engaging and fun environment because we all learn from each other. A great way to learn is to get hands-on experience…. be it through classroom assignments, campus media or a partnership with a professional television station. I’m all about finding ways to showcase that student work and to say, ‘hey-look what great things our students are doing!’"

“I work to create a community in each of my classes. Students need effective public speaking skills no matter the field they choose. Having started my career in speaking as an extremely apprehensive speaker, my goal is first to help students conquer their fear of speaking, then to realize the potential each has for becoming an excellent speaker.

“Having come from a very academic background, I have seen the importance of ‘real world’ applications grow as time has passed. I want my students to have what I did not experience: practice in using their communication skills off campus in other settings. For this reason, and because I believe that we can each make a difference in our world, I emphasize Service-Learning in many of my courses.”
