Sport SCIENCE and Management Overview
The Sport Science and Management Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sport Management, a Coaching Minor, a certificate in Athletic Training, and various one-credit courses in physical education.
The Sport Management major is designed to provide students with an applied business degree for the sports environment/industry. Majors acquire a strong foundation in management, finance, accounting, marketing, communications, ethics and legal aspects of business. Specific courses in Sport Management provide students with an understanding of the role of sport in society, the role of management in sport, and opportunities to apply their knowledge in sport-related organizations.
Students supplement classroom teaching with a variety of practical experiences through field trips. They also work in sport management settings through academic service learning and gain field experience by working in sport management settings. Students in sport management gain both knowledge and practical experience, which are necessary for their future success in a variety of sport management careers.
COACHING MINOR
The Coaching Minor responds to the current demands and future needs for coaches in a wide variety of sport settings. Along with foundation subjects in ethics, leadership and psychology, the minor combines studies in athletics, education, motivation and leadership, organization and governance, as well as the technical and tactical aspects of various sports which will provide the knowledge required for employment in youth, club, recreational, leisure, high school, collegiate and professional coaching.
Students supplement classroom teaching with practical experience through a coaching practicum. Students in coaching gain both the knowledge and practical experiences, which are necessary for their future success in a variety of coaching careers. The minor is open to all majors and a certificate in coaching is available.
ATHLETIC TRAINING CERTIFICATE
The Athletic Training program is an 18 credit-hour certificate with an emphasis on entering athletic training. The certificate program will give an individual a foundation of understanding and experiencing athletic training. It is intended to give current or future professional trainers the fundamentals for these positions.
Although the program aims primarily at full-time students interested in seeking additional course work in athletics, it is open to non-degree-seeking individuals.
