Program Format

The curriculum for the Doctorate in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service in Higher Education focuses on contemporary leadership theories with a strong foundation in research. A broad understanding of the complex nature of higher education is woven throughout the curriculum, but the primary focus of the program is to prepare students to lead through meaningful change. Rather than simply building your knowledge of higher education theory, you will learn to become a leader who will function effectively within your organization to create positive change.

The curriculum emphasizes practical aspects of leadership, learning, and service. The schedule of the program is designed with students in mind, and the faculty practice brain-based, adult teaching methods. Each year, students participate in a two-week summer institute, addressing the major current issues in higher education.

Students start working on their dissertation in the first year in order to fully connect the learning with the research. The emphasis on leadership in higher education is a focus throughout the entire curriculum, including the summer institute and the research courses.
