ME Teaching, Learning and Leadership

The Master of Education (M.E.) in Teaching, Learning and Leadership (online format) program reflects the most current educational research, and is designed specifically for working K-12 classroom teachers who want to improve the student learning in their classrooms and in their own practice while learning in online environment.

The program incorporates the Five Core Principles of Teaching as described by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and the InTASC standards.

The courses in the Teaching portion of the program provide today’s teachers with the tools, skills, and repertoire of strategies they need to meet the increasing demands of multiple stakeholders who clamor for greater accountability and increased student achievement.

The Learning curriculum is designed to focus on students and ways teachers can better understand how children learn. Understanding how the brain learns and the ways gender, race, and culture impact students allows teachers to make better instructional decisions.

The expectations of the classroom teacher are expanding to include school-based and community-based involvement. The courses in the Leadership portion of the program help develop key leadership skills that today’s teachers need to help meet these increased expectations.

It is an expectation that upon completion of this degree, students will actively apply the following principles:

  • Teachers are committed to students and learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.

Participants in this 32 credit program complete an applied research project that allows them to focus on a specific area of professional practice they want to improve or a particular problem for which they seek a solution. The area of focus of the project is targeted to meet each participant’s unique needs in regards to their teaching situation and personal goals of the program.
