In spring 2016, the St. Francis of Assisi Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order received its canonical recognition, formally establishing it as a fraternity of the Franciscan order.

Father James Gannon, OFM, led the group in celebrating Mass in the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel on the Stritch campus.

The fraternity was established with 15 professed Secular Franciscans and six additional members in initial formation. Members gather monthly at Stritch for prayer and faith formation.

Secular Franciscans are not a vowed religious community, though they commit to following the ways of St. Francis through service, prayer and spirituality.
