Alumni Association revises awards program; launches 2014 nominations

The Alumni Association is launching a revamped alumni awards program.

The association has presented awards to honor alumni and friends of the University since 1987. During that time, more than 100 recipients have been recognized. The revised awards program includes new award categories, updated award selection criteria and a new date for the awards celebration dinner.

“The Nominations and Awards committee in collaboration with the Alumni Association office took a year to research best practices for alumni recognition at peer and aspirant colleges and universities,” said committee co-chair and president-elect of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, Zoreedua Perkins, ’06, ’08. “After a close analysis of the history of Stritch’s awards program in combination with some of those best practices from other institutions, the result is what we feel is the best mix of award categories that honor our graduates for their professional achievements, community contributions and service to the University.”

The new award categories are as follows:

  • Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement
  • Graduate of the Last Decade Award
  • Spirit of St. Francis Service Award: Alumni Service
  • Spirit of St. Francis Service Award: University Supporter
  • The Mother Bartholomew, OSF Lifetime Achievement Award

The association added two new awards and revised award criteria in the previous categories of Professional achievement and Graduate of the Last Decade. Added award categories include a new lifetime achievement award, named after Stritch’s founding president, Mother Bartholomew, OSF. The previous Spirit of St. Francis Award for Community Service was split into two categories, one honoring alumni service (to Stritch and the community) and the other, a non-graduate award to recognize service to Stritch. 

“The group felt strongly that we should bring back the non-graduate service award that we used to do,” said Perkins. “In addition to our outstanding alumni, we have a lot of great community supporters and friends who give of their time, talent and treasure that deserve to be recognized.” New award criteria were developed which includes a standard criteria list, regardless of the award category.

The annual awards dinner, which had previously been held in the spring of each year to coincide with the University’s Honors Convocation is being moved to the Jubilarian/25-year reunion weekend held in June. The awards celebration will be the highlight and signature event of the new alumni celebration weekend.

“The move allows us to grow the audience for this important recognition program,” said Perkins. “The hope is that this new venue with the added reunion groups will allow for greater exposure to the awards program and the notable alumni who are honored.” The 2014 alumni awards celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 21.  

The Alumni Association seeks nominations from the Stritch community for deserving alumni now through Friday, Nov. 15. The nominations and awards committee will oversee the nomination process, including candidate discernment. The 2014 recipients will be announced next spring.
