December 2013 Commencement

A total of 479 students received their degrees as Stritch’s held its winter commencement ceremony Dec. 14 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The ceremony brought together undergraduate and graduate students from each of the University’s four colleges.

Stritch welcomed Dr. Mehmood Khan, executive vice president and chief scientific officer of global research and development for PepsiCo, as commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient.

Over the last five years, Khan has led PepsiCo’s investment in research and development; recruited expert clinical scientists, global health leaders, and medical professionals; and directed new business development.

Prior to joining PepsiCo, Khan served as president for Takeda Global Research and Development Center. He has also worked as a consultant, endocrinologist, and faculty member at the Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn.

Khan serves on many national and state committees, including the New York Academy of Sciences, the State of Illinois Innovation Council, and the Board of the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation. He earned his medical degree from the University of Liverpool Medical School, England, and completed a fellowship in clinical endocrinology and nutrition and the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis’ Department of Medicine and Food Science and Nutrition.

Khan spoke at the May commencement ceremony in Minnesota and recently visited with students there.

The ceremony also featured a student speaker. Tabitha Smith, A.S. degree candidate, addressed her classmates and offered a reflection on her time at Stritch.

The day’s events began with a special Baccalaureate Mass for graduating students. Immediately following Mass, graduates were invited to a celebratory brunch.
