Commencement ceremonies honor Class of 2013

The Cardinal Stritch University Class of 2013 was honored in two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 19.

The graduate ceremony for Master’s and Doctoral graduates was held at 11 a.m., and the undergraduate ceremony for Associate and Bachelor’s graduates was held at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies took place at the Delta Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave, in downtown Milwaukee.

 

Approximately 620 students received their degrees this month, and 320 students participated in the commencement ceremonies.

Stritch is honored to have welcomed Al Costigan as commencement speaker for both ceremonies. He also received an honorary degree in humane letters from the University.

Costigan is the retired president/CEO of Level Valley Creamery, Inc. and a member of Stritch’s Board of Trustees.

Costigan worked in the food industry for more than 45 years with General Mills, RJR Foods and Henri’s Food Products, which brought him to Milwaukee. In 1995, he and his two partners purchased Level Valley Creamery Inc. in West Bend. He served as president and CEO of the company for 9 ½ years before selling it to Schreiber Foods of Green Bay.

As a community volunteer, Costigan has served on the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund board of directors for more than 25 years. He has served on the boards of Clasen Quality Coatings, Inc., The Milwaukee Protestant Home, Milwaukee Urban Soccer Coalition, and the North Shore Country Club, as well as the Research Committee of the Children’s Research Institute at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He also administers The Costigan Family Foundation.

Through his business and nonprofit leadership, Costigan truly embraces Stritch’s Franciscan values.

The weekend’s events also included a pinning ceremony for graduates of the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing on Friday, May 17. On Saturday, May 18, a special Baccalaureate Mass was held for graduating students in the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel. A President’s Reception was held in Bonaventure Hall immediately following Mass.
