Technology updates include phase out of VCRs

Friday, January 25, 2013 4:35:00 PM

The upgrading of the layout, furniture, and technology in Stritch classrooms is continuing in 2013, and this process includes the phase out of some older technology including VCRs.

The new standard for classroom podium technology is: desktop computer, document camera, Blu-Ray player, and external laptop connection.

As classroom upgrades continue at the main campus and remote sites, the technology implemented will follow this podium setup. This new standard includes the phasing out of VCRs, an obsolete technology according to modern norms. Blu-Ray players will eventually replace all VCRs and DVD players campus-wide. DVDs can be played in all Blu-Ray players.

If a VCR fails in a classroom that has yet to be upgraded, it will not be replaced since Information Services staff can no longer support VHS technology. Online resources such as YouTube or curriculum websites and digital media, such as DVDs and Blu-Rays from the Library, are alternatives to VHS options.

In addition, document cameras have replaced overhead projectors, another obsolete technology, in recent years.

This process is expected to be completed by March 1, 2013.
