Flynn to offer address at commencement ceremony May 18

Mary Flynn, assistant professor and president of the Stritch Faculty Senate, will be the commencement speaker as Cardinal Stritch University conducts its commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Flynn joined the Stritch faculty in what was then the Teacher Education Division in 1992 and has taught students from all four colleges over the course of her career. With an expertise in languages, culture, and literature, Flynn has enjoyed working with teacher candidates to provide a foundation for teaching students of all cultures and backgrounds. In addition, she is a member of the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honorary society and the Phi Kappa Phi Cross Disciplinary Community Service Honor Society. She received both the Educator of the Year and the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership awards from Stritch in 2012 and received a Fulbright grant to study in Italy.

Flynn has a master’s degree in foreign language and literature from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from Mount Senario College.

Friday

Nate Friday, B.A. degree candidate in broadfield social studies and secondary education, will address his peers as the ceremony’s student speaker. During his four years at Stritch, Friday was the starting pitcher for the Wolves baseball team, led several University Ministry retreats, and served on the Student Athletic Advisory Council. A Glendale native, he will begin his career as director of lifelong formation for St. Matthias Catholic Church in Milwaukee. In this position, which directs formation for all age groups, Friday will develop curricula, coordinate classes, and provide professional development for catechists.

Stritch President Dr. James Loftus will offer a charge to the graduates at the ceremony. A total of 679 students will receive their degrees this spring, including 409 undergraduates, 254 graduate students and 16 doctoral students.  

The weekend’s events will also include the following:

  • Pinning ceremony for graduates from the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing -- 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16 in the Nancy Kendall Theater. A reception for nursing graduates and their families will follow.
  • Graduation Mass -- 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 18 in the Nancy Kendall Theater. (Please note location change.)
  • Celebratory Brunch -- 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 in the Sister Camille Kliebhan Conference Center.
