Tuesday, May 13, 2014 4:10:00 PM

A total of 679 students will receive their degrees this spring as Cardinal Stritch University conducts its commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The graduating class includes 409 undergraduates, 254 graduate students and 16 doctoral students.

Mary Flynn, assistant professor and president of the Stritch Faculty Senate, will be the commencement speaker. Flynn joined the Stritch faculty in what was then the Teacher Education Division in 1992 and has taught students from all four of Stritch’s colleges over the course of her career. With an expertise in languages, culture, and literature, Flynn has enjoyed working with teacher candidates to provide a foundation for teaching students of all cultures and backgrounds.

She also is a member of the Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Cross Disciplinary Community Service Honor Society. She received both the Educator of the Year and the Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership awards from Stritch in 2012 and received a Fulbright grant to study in Italy. She has a master’s degree in foreign language and literature from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from Mount Senario College.

Nate Friday, bachelor of arts degree candidate, will address his peers as the ceremony’s student speaker. During his four years at Stritch, Friday was the starting pitcher for the Wolves baseball team, led several University Ministry retreats, and served on the Student Athletic Advisory Council. A Glendale native, he will begin his career as director of lifelong formation for St. Matthias Catholic Church in Milwaukee. In this position, which directs formation for all age groups, Friday will develop curricula, coordinate classes, and provide professional development for catechists.

Stritch President Dr. James Loftus will offer a charge to the graduates at the ceremony.  Other events over commencement weekend will include a pinning ceremony for graduates of the Ruth S. Coleman College of Nursing, a Graduation Mass, and a celebratory brunch. For more information on commencement weekend, visit Stritch online.
