Service Description
Cardinal Stritch University Office of
Information Services, Infrastructure team has the responsibility for providing
and maintaining a Domain Name System (DNS) both internally and externally to
support client computer name resolution. There are two separate systems for
maintaining DNS records, one for internal resources and another for
external.
How to Use this Service
- DNS supports translating
human-readable names into the IP addresses that identify computers on the
network. For example, when you browse to http://my.stritch.edu, one of the DNS
servers will resolve that name my.stritch.edu to the computer address (e.g.
192.168.110.22) hosting the content you are trying to access. You use this
service any time you access a computer by name instead of IP address
-
If you need an internal record, provide the name and IP address of the server
resource that needs a new DNS record to the service owner.
- If you need
a new external record, provide the name and internal IP address of the server
resource. A new external IP address will be provisioned and the appropriate DNS
records created. Additionally, specify which ports will need to be internet
accessible so the appropriate firewall rules can be created to allow external
traffic.
