Service Description

SWITCH is an acronym for the Southeastern Wisconsin Information Technology Exchange, a consortium of eight college and research libraries in the Milwaukee area of which the Stritch Library is a member. More detailed information can be found on the SWITCH website.

SWITCH: is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization set up in the late 1980's by participating private colleges in the Milwaukee area. Its purpose is to help advance the effective implementation of information technology at its member libraries and institutions and to facilitate cooperative ventures between its member institutions:

Alverno College
Cardinal Stritch University
Concordia University Wisconsin
Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design
Mount Mary College
Sacred Heart School of Theology
St. Francis Seminary
Wisconsin Lutheran College

What it means for library users is that you get resources from the other seven libraries quickly and easily. Items found in TOPCAT that are not owned by CSU may be requested by CSU patrons and sent to CSU (or other SWITCH location) for pickup.

A delivery service shuttles materials between SWITCH libraries mornings and early afternoons, Monday through Friday. The service makes its route in the morning and early afternoon - so once a day. The item should arrive at CSU within 48 hours, often the next day (if Monday through Friday).

There are items you cannot request or borrow through SWITCH, such as items that are on reserve or are "in library use only" and check out items using your Stritch ID card. This consortium exchange means you have over 900, 000 items that you can use at your disposal.

How to Use this Service

You can request an item from any of the SWITCH institutions by selecting the REQUEST button found at the top ofits TOPCAT record.  You will be asked to login to TOPCAT be entering your library barcode number and PIN.  The barcode number (begins with 45051) is located above the barcode on the front of your CSU ID card. Next, you'll be asked to select where you would like to pick up the item. If you are a distance learner (online student), you can request off-campus delivery for your items and they will be mailed to your home address. You will receive an e-mail when the item is ready for pick-up.

If you select off-campus delivery, it may take longer to get your item as it will be going through the U.S. Postal Service. You will be required to pay for the postage to return the item OR you can bring it to any of the SWITCH institutions. All SWITCH materials may be returned to any SWITCH library.

If you have not created a PIN, you will create your own before proceeding with the request. To create your PIN, be sure the barcode field is entered, leave the PIN field blank, and click the SUBMIT button. You will be prompted to create a new PIN.

If you cannot remember your PIN then either click the FORGOT PIN or call the reference desk: 414-410-4257.

If you do not have an ID card, or lost your card, you can look up your barcode information in My Stritch.  A PDF version of your card will be located under Personal Info - Get library barcode information.
