A Message from the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the College of Arts and Sciences web page. I hope that the information on this site will be useful for you. The information I share below is intended to provide an initial context for understanding this college.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers today more than 20 different undergraduate degree programs ranging in fields from Psychology and Criminal Justice to Computer Science and Biology,  3 graduate degree programs (Clinical Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sport Science Management), and 7 pre-professional programs, such as Pre-Medicine and Pre-Law.  All of our undergraduate and graduate classes are taught by professors with proven expertise in their fields of study. No students are taught by teaching assistants.   

Dating back to the founding of our institution in 1937, when we were Saint Clare College, we have always valued the importance of a Liberal Arts education. Sixty years later, as we transitioned in 1997 from Cardinal Stritch College to Cardinal Stritch University with four distinct colleges (Business, Nursing, Education, and Arts and Sciences), our Liberal Arts identity was maintained and strengthened, with the College of Arts and Sciences faculty owning, developing, and teaching our Liberal Arts Core Curriculum to students in all four colleges. Grounded in our four Franciscan values (making peace, reverencing creation, creating a caring community, and showing compassion), our faculty and staff strive to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and disposition needed to be successful in whatever field of study they choose to pursue.

What is a Concurrent Enrollment Program?

The Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) at Stritch allows qualified high school students to learn and qualified high school instructors to teach Cardinal Stritch University’s curriculum at the partner school’s campus during regular school hours.  Students enrolled in the program concurrently earn both high school and college credit.  The number and size of concurrent enrollment programs are growing nationwide.  While only 55% of postsecondary institutions had concurrent enrollment programs offering courses at high school campuses in 2002-03, the percentage grew to 64% by 2011-12 (NCES, 2013) and continues to grow.  The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) and partner organizations are working to expand concurrent enrollment opportunities while ensuring that the courses maintain the expected rigor.  Over 10,400 concurrent enrollment programs exist throughout the country, with more currently in development (Mobley, 2015).  Over 1.4 million students across the country participate in these programs.
 

Concurrent Enrollment at Cardinal Stritch University

Qualified students at a partner school who enroll in a Cardinal Stritch University class being offered at their school are admitted to the University as “non-degree seeking students.”  Upon successful completion of the course, these students will receive college credit that will appear on a Cardinal Stritch transcript.  They will be sent a record of that transcript reflecting those credits earned and the grade in the course.  An official transcript sent from Cardinal Stritch University verifies to other colleges/universities that the student has earned and received university credits from Cardinal Stritch University for a particular course or set of courses.  These credits are accepted by nearly all colleges/universities in the same way they would accept credits for traditional transfer students.
