Program Format

In this program, students can earn either a Ph.D., which is more research-based, or an Ed.D., which is more practitioner-oriented. The doctoral program has been in existence since 1998, and has enrolled 559 students over the years.

The curriculum emphasizes practical aspects of leadership, learning, and service. The schedule of the program is designed with students in mind, and the faculty practice brain-based, adult teaching methods. Each year, students participate in a two-week summer institute that provides speakers from all over the world in a conference-like setting, addressing the major current issues in leadership, learning, and service.

Students start working on their dissertation in the first year in order to fully connect the learning with the research. All of the courses are fully integrated with one another, just like they would be in the real world. Students do not learn about research in isolation, but rather the practical value of research when it comes to leadership skills and responsibilities.
