Dr. Katherine M. Houghton

HoughtonDr. Katherine M. Houghton has worked in higher education administration on land and sea for more than 20 years in both the United States and Caribbean.

She has circumnavigated the world twice as administrator on the Semester at Sea program, University of Pittsburgh, and Institute for Shipboard Education. Katherine was dean of academic administration and student affairs at Ross University School of Medicine, Island of Dominica, West Indies.

While she was the vice president of enrollment management and student affairs at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, she established an awarding-winning residential program for single mothers and their children.

Presently, Katherine is the interim academic dean at the Art Institute of Charleston, South Carolina, where she combines her fine arts background with her commitment to providing access to higher education for a diversity of learners.

Katherine has amassed considerable expertise in issues relevant to adult learning, providing access to non-traditional learners, and establishing educational support systems for marginalized populations. She has been featured as a keynote speaker and presenter on topics including leadership in higher education, multicultural programming, students with invisible handicaps, higher education and single motherhood, and global issues impacting women and children.

Her most recent scholarly pursuits combine her background as a photographer, extensive international travel, expertise in qualitative research, and commitment to furthering the cause of underrepresented women and children around the world.

Every Saturday Dye’s Grocery Shop in Dominica, West Indies is a place of vibrant activity. Dye’s shop is a focal point in the market place. Dominicans come to the shop to purchase local groceries, rums, and spices and converse about politics, weather, cricket, and any other issues relevant to daily living.
