[NOW ALSO OFFERING K-12TH GRADE MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENTS & TUTORING! REGISTER FOR JANUARY START DATE.]

The Literacy Centers offer comprehensive READING / LITERACY and MATH ASSESSMENT and TUTORING SERVICES for students in grades K-12 from public, charter or choice schools.  Home-schooled children are also eligible to attend our programs.

Individualized Attention

Our program offers individualized intervention plans built from research-based best practices in phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, and study skills. The curriculum / intervention plans have a foundation in basic literacy instruction and engaged motivation, through inspiring self-confidence and success as a reader.  All students are tutored primarily one-on-one, and occasionally in very small groups of two, by experienced teaching professionals with graduate degrees or by Cardinal Stritch University graduate students, depending on the Program.

"We know that a student's level of literacy in third grade predicts their academic success at the high school level with 90% accuracy," says Dr. Molly Shiffler.  "So we owe it to our kids to support that future success as early and as intensely as we can."

We have helped students succeed since 1943, through applying research-based strategies tailored to their strengths, needs, and ongoing progress. In answer to the question, "What have you liked most about your child's experience at the Cardinal Stritch Literacy Center?" parents responded with the following comments: "His improvement in reading and building confidence within himself";"my child has made great literacy improvements which would not have happened without private sessions"; "he is gaining confidence due to the excellent program"; "her confidence has dramatically improved"; "that he is not only learning, but enjoys it."

Program Description

We have two programs - Standard and Practicum.  In the Standard Program (which is a full-tuition program), all students are tutored either one-on-one or in groups of two by graduate literacy professionals.  Fourteen 90-minute lessons are delivered during the Fall and Spring semesters. (The Summer semester has twelve 90-minute lessons.)

In the Practicum Program, Cardinal Stritch University graduate students perform the initial evaluation and teach the lesson plans under the supervision of experienced Master Instructors and a University Assistant Professor.  Twelve 90-minute lessons are delivered during each semester.  Students who qualify for free or reduced meals according to Federal Guidelines are eligible to participate in the Practicum Program; the tuition is substantially reduced.
