Stritch Baseball Concludes Season with Loss to Robert Morris 2009 season ends for Wolves
May 7, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team concluded the 2009 season on Thursday afternoon against the Robert Morris College Eagles. Finishing yesterday’s rain out, the Wolves fell in game one 4-3 and then fell in the second game by a score of 20-10.
In game one, starter Troy Engibous (Muskego, Wis.) grinded his way through six innings of work, but gave the Wolves a solid chance to win. After yielding runs in the first two innings, Engibous settled down to go scoreless in the next two innings.
Down 2-0, the Stritch offense got on the board in the fourth inning. After Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) hit into a fielder’s choice, Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) came to the plate with one out and Sarauer on first. Abromaitis quickly tied the game at two by sending his fifth homerun of the season, a two-run shot, over the left field wall, tying the game at 2-2.
The Eagles would add two more over the course of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead over the Wolves.
The closest Stritch would come would be a sacrifice fly by Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), but that would be all as the scoring would close at 4-3 in favor of the Eagles.
Stritch received a strong performance on the mound by Engibous as the freshman allowed four hits over the course of six innings. The freshman also struck out five batters while issuing five walks.
Game two would turn out to be a slugfest as the two teams would combine to post 30 runs on the board and tally 38 hits in just seven innings. Although the Wolves were bested by a score of 20-10, Abromaitis would lead the Wolves offensively with a pinch hit three-run homerun for his sixth of the year.
With the losses, the Wolves finish the season at 9-46 overall and 5-25 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Meanwhile the Eagles finish at 34-19 overall and 14-16 in the conference.
Wolves Baseball Falls To Robert Morris Game two cancelled due to rainMay 6, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team fell to the Robert Morris College Eagles on Wednesday afternoon in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup. The Eagles bested the Wolves by a score of 9-4 in game one. Meanwhile, game two would end up getting cancelled due to rain.
In game one, the Wolves sent Jeff Zimpel (Green Bay, Wis.) to the mound. Typically a reliever, Zimpel gave up a run in the first inning and then three in the third while Robert Morris jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.
Entering the fourth, Stritch would get two back thanks to Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) and Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.). With two out and a man on first, Sarauer tripled down the right field line to score Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.). Tesch would follow Sarauer with a single, plating the Wolves’ right fielder and cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Despite the efforts of the Wolves to cut into the Eagles lead, Robert Morris came back to plate five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the score to 8-2.
Stritch would respond with two more runs in the top of the sixth as Sarauer and Tesch would each add another RBI apiece to put the score at 8-4.
Unfortunately, it would be all the Wolves could get as the Eagles would plate one more in the sixth, ending the scoring at 9-4.
Next up, Stritch will face Robert Morris at home on Thursday afternoon to close out the regular season. It’s currently undecided if the scheduled nine inning game will now include a seven inning game from today’s cancellation. Game time at Sheridan Park is currently still slated for 2 p.m.
Wolves Get Win Over TigersAfter falling in game one, Stritch takes game two
May 5, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. - After dropping game one by a score of 4-2, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team came away with a split against the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers in game two. Timely hitting and strong pitching led Stritch to a 4-2 victory of its own in the second game.
In game one, starting pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) pitched strong for Stritch. However, three errors by the Wolves’ defense didn’t help as the Tigers were able to plate four runs against Calvert.
Despite the loss, Calvert gave a quality start as he went five and two-thirds innings while scattering seven hits, striking out five, and allowing just two earned runs. Offensively, the Wolves didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the seventh as catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) smacked a two-run double to centerfield, plating the only runs of the game for Stritch.
Game two saw the Wolves turn the tables on the Tigers. Pitcher Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) was strong in five and two-thirds innings, yielding just two hits and one earned run.
The offense, which had just two hits in game two, made the most of the few opportunities it had. With bases loaded in the fourth inning, freshman Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.) drew a key bases-loaded walk to put Stritch up 1-0. With Trewyn entering as the next hitter, the junior landed the decisive blow, drilling a three-run double to left centerfield to put Stritch up 4-0.
While the Tigers would end up chasing Thompson from the game after plating two runs, sophomore Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.) was called upon to close the door and did so with three strikeouts over the course of one and one-thirds innings of relief for his first save of the season.
The wins extend the Wolves’ overall record to 9-43 and their CCAC record to 5-22. The Tigers’ record moved to 26-17 overall and 15-12 in the conference. Next up, the Wolves will head to Chicago, Ill. for their last doubleheader of the season. Stritch will match up against Robert Morris College with game one set to start at 3 p.m.
Stritch Baseball Scores Win Over TrollsOffense pounds out 11 runs on 13 hits
May 4, 2009
Palos Heights, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team rolled to a big win over the Trinity Christian College Trolls by a score of 11-5 on Monday afternoon.
The Wolves kicked things off by scoring runs in each of the first three innings. In the first inning, Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) got things going with an RBI double to left centerfield to score Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.), who had led off the game with a walk.
After Wolves starting pitcher Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) got out of the first inning with the help of a double play and a foul out, the offense went right back to work in the top of the second inning. Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.), who went 4-4 in Saturday’s matchup against the Trolls, led off the top of the second with a solo homerun to left centerfield, his third of the year.
Calvert would, again, get through the bottom of the second stranding a base runner and giving the offense another chance to build upon the 2-0 lead. The Wolves took advantage of the momentum. After Lark reached on an error by the Trolls’ catcher, John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) sent his third homerun of the season, a two-run shot, over the wall to give Stritch a 4-0 lead.
Both teams would then be held scoreless until the fifth inning when Stritch plated three more runs in the top of the fifth courtesy of an RBI double by Sarauer and an RBI single from Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.). The runs would now put the Wolves’ lead to 7-0.
Calvert, who scattered 10 hits on the day, would work around two hits in the bottom of the fifth, but would get touched up for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Trolls cutting into the deficit, 7-2. The Wolves would come right back, though, in the top of the seventh with bases loaded. Lark would end up extending the Stritch lead to 10-2 with a timely three-run double to right field.
Trinity Christian would finally knock Calvert from the game with a three-run homerun, putting the score at 10-5, but that would be all the Trolls would get as Stritch reliever Brian Hirschinger (Grafton, Wis.) would close the door the rest of the way.
The Wolves would eventually push the lead to 11-5 in the top of the eighth inning courtesy of Sarauer again. The sophomore would send his second homerun of the game, fourth of the season, over the right field wall to cap the scoring.
On the day, the explosive Wolves offense was led by Sarauer and Lark. Sarauer ended up 4-5 with four RBI while Lark went 3-5 with four RBI.
The win pushed the Wolves to 8-42 overall and 4-21 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). The loss drops the Trolls to 12-27 overall and 7-20 in the conference. Next up, Stritch will host the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers on Tuesday May 5. The game is a makeup date from the end of April when the two teams were rained out. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m. at Sheridan Park in Cudahy, Wis.
Wolves Baseball Earns Split Against Trinity ChristianMoraza, Sarauer, and Lark have big days
May 2, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. - After losing to the Trinity Christian College Trolls baseball team by a score of 11-7 in game one of a Saturday doubleheader, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves returned strong in game two. Riding the waves of strong hitting in the second game, Stritch cruised to a 14-4 win to earn a split in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Trolls managed to strike first, plating a run for an early 1-0 lead against Stritch starter Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.). However, the Wolves would respond for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) got the Wolves on the board with an RBI single, one of four hits on the day for the right fielder. A couple more RBI base hits later in the inning would leave Stritch with a 3-1 lead.
While the RBI singles put the Wolves ahead, it was a shot off the bat of senior Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) that provided the major damage in the inning. With bases loaded, Moraza made the most of Senior Day, sending a pitch over the left centerfield wall for a grand slam, his fourth homerun of the season. The shot also put Stritch up 7-1.
Trinity Christian would get back on the board with a three-run fourth inning. The significant damage came from Joe Musolino (Chicago, Ill.). Musolino capped off the inning with a two-run homerun off of Klein, cutting the Wolves’ lead to 7-4.
The four runs would be all the Troll would get, however, as the Wolves would plate seven more runs throughout the course of the fourth and fifth innings for the run-ruled shortened win.
Moraza would lead the way with three hits and six RBI while Sarauer would four hits and four RBI. Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) also had a strong day for Stritch. The sophomore combined to go 7-9 between the two games with three RBI.
The split today puts Stritch at 7-42 overall and 3-21 in the CCAC. TCC’s record goes to 12-26 overall and 7-19 in the conference. Up next, the two teams will meet again on Monday, May 4 in Palos Heights, Ill. The game will be one nine inning game played at 4 p.m.

Stritch struggles against Olivet Nazarene
Apr. 24, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – One day after playing a stellar game against and NCAA Division I school, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team was left searching for answers after falling to the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers by a score of 9-1 on Friday afternoon.
While the offense struggled to generate runs, starting pitcher Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) was roughed up over the course of six innings. Thompson, who is usually sharp on the mound, had an off day surrendering eight runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out two.
Offensively, the Wolves could muster just six hits throughout the course of the game. The lone Stritch run came in the eighth inning as Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.) had an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield to score Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) from third base.
Despite the score, the Wolves did get a solid relief effort from junior Brian Hirschinger (Grafton, Wis.). Hirschinger worked three innings while allowing just one hit and no runs over the duration, holding the Tigers scoreless in the final three frames.
The two teams will match up again on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
Wolves Baseball Defeated by Panthers Stritch plays strong against UWM
Apr. 23, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. - Playing for just the fifth time in school history, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball program gave a strong effort against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on Thursday afternoon. Despite the efforts, the Wolves fell in the cross-town contest by a score of 7-3.
After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, the Panthers would end up striking first as UWM would put five runs on the board against Stritch starter Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) as Calvert would yield five hits in the inning.
The Wolves would answer back in the top of the third inning as Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) would open the inning with a walk. Trewyn would be moved over on a sacrifice by Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) and advance to third on a wild pitch from Panthers starter Gabe Marshall (Jacksonville, Ill.). The Stritch catcher would end up getting knocked home by Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) on the freshman’s infield single.
Stritch would add another run off an RBI from Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.). Cook would bring home Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.), who had doubled to lead off the inning, closing the deficit to 5-2.
Calvert, who settled down after the second inning, would work strong on the mound and hold the Panthers off the board the next four innings and keeping the score at 5-2.
Entering the top of the seventh, the Wolves got on the board again thanks to Trewyn, Thompson, and Roepke. Trewyn opened the inning with a single to centerfield and then advance to second on wild pitch from UWM’s Cameron Amsrud (Schofield, Wis.). Thompson would then advance Trewyn to third on a sacrifice to first base while Roepke would drive him in with a ground ball out to the second base side. The RBI by Roepke, his second of the game, closed the gap to 5-3.
Calvert would be unable to hold UWM off the board in the bottom of the seventh as the Panthers ended up adding two runs to the lead to extend the score to 7-3. The Wolves right hander would exit the game with one out in the seventh, allowing seven runs while scattering 12 hits over the duration.
Jeff Zimpel (Green Bay, Wis.) would end up replacing Calvert on the mound and hold the Panthers to just two hits over the remaining inning and two-thirds. Unfortunately, the Stritch offense would not be able to put any more runs on the board after the seventh and the game would end at 7-3.
The loss puts the Wolves at 6-39 while the Panthers improved to 16-19 overall. Up next, the Wolves will return home for a three-game set against Olivet-Nazarene University over the course of Friday and Saturday. Game one will take place on Friday at 4 p.m. and will be one nine inning game. The series will take place at Sheridan Park in Cudahy, home of the Wolves.
Wolves Baseball Loses To Trinity International Base running miscues stall game two rally
Apr. 22, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – After suffering a rough defeat in game one, 17-0, against the Trinity International University Trojans baseball team, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team fell in game two by a score of 8-6.
Looking to rebound after dropping game one 17-0, the Wolves found themselves in a hole early on in game two as starter Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) would allow a run-scoring single from the Trojans’ Scott Lawson (Peoria, Ill.), moving the score to 1-0 in favor of TIU.
Unlike game one, the Wolves came back in the bottom of the first inning with an answer to the Trojans’ opening run. With two out, Stritch sophomore leftfielder Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homerun, his first of the season, to left centerfield.
Standish would hold the Trojans scoreless in the top of the second allowing the Stritch offense a chance to untie the game in the bottom half of the frame. A lead-off double by Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.), a hit-by-pitch on Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.), along with a single by Nick Majeske (Milwaukee, Wis.) would load the bases for Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.).
James would end up scoring Sarauer from third while reaching on a fielder’s choice with Majeske being out at second base. The Wolves now had a 2-1 lead and would extend it to 3-1 with an RBI single by Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.), who extended his hitting streak to seven games.
The score would remain at 3-1 until Standish would run into some trouble in the fifth inning. The Trojans would end up overtaking the Stritch lead by stringing together five runs on three hits to take a 6-3 lead.
TIU would add two more key runs to the lead in the top of the sixth to push the score to 8-3.
The Wolves wouldn’t go quietly though. Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, an infield single by Majeske and a pinch-hit walk by Mike Ploch (Burlington, Wis.) would put two on for Moraza. The Stritch senior would come through by sending a run-scoring single through the infield to notch his 22nd RBI and cut the deficit to 8-4.
Next, a single by Lark would load the bases for rightfielder Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.). Abromaitis would send a single to leftfield to cut the score to 8-5. Catcher John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) would follow up the Abromaitis single with a bases loaded walk to bring the Wolves to within two at 8-6.
With the bases loaded and still nobody out, Wolves head coach Michael Zolecki inserted pinch runners at second base and first base in the form of Jeff Zimpel (Green Bay, Wis.) and Marcus Perleberg (Delafield, Wis.). The Trojans countered by inserting relief pitcher Caleb Johnson (Elk Grove, Ill.).
With bases still loaded, Sarauer would end up strking out against Johnson putting the first out on the board. From there, chaos seemed to ensue. Phil Cook came up next for the Wolves and sent a ground ball to first base. TIU’s Philip Sims (Waukegan, Ill.) would field the ball and step on first for out number two.
However, as Sims stepped on first, he fired the ball home to catch Lark between third and home. Lark managed to somehow get back to third, but Zimpel ended up getting caught between second and third base. Zimpel would also find some way of getting back to second safely in the rundown. The same, unfortunately, could not be said for Perleberg who was caught between first and second and would end up getting tagged for the final out, ending the game at 8-6.
With the losses, the Wolves fall to 6-38 overall and 2-18 in the conference while the Trojans improve to 7-22 overall and 6-15 in the conference. Up next, Stritch will head across town to play the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers at Henry Aaron Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

Stritch Baseball Overpowered by Crimson WaveWolves struggle on the road
Apr. 17, 2009
Whiting, Ind. – Friday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball matchup between the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves and the Calumet College of St. Joseph made for a day to forget. Out-hit by a margin of 16-5, Stritch fell in the conference game, 15-0, to the Crimson Wave.
Things got off on the wrong foot from the beginning as Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) led off with a strikeout. Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.), who doubled following James, would end up being thrown out at third during a double-play off the bat of Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) to end the inning.
Things didn’t get better in the bottom half of the inning as Stritch starting pitcher Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) would allow the first three Crimson Wave hitters to reach base with a lead-off double, an error, and then a single that would eventually pave the way for a three-run first inning.
The day would end up turning sour for the Wolves as the Crimson Wave would end up scoring 12 more unanswered runs during the course of the next six innings. The Stritch hitters couldn’t get things going either as the bats would only tally four more hits after the first inning.
The loss drops the Wolves to 5-35 overall and to 1-15 in the CCAC. The Crimson Wave improved to 6-28 overall and 5-11 in the conference. The two teams will match up again on Saturday with a conference doubleheader in Milwaukee, Wis. The two-game set is slated to start at 1 p.m. at Sheridan Park.
Stritch Baseball Topped By ViterboOffense struggles late in game one; quiet in game twoApr. 15, 2009
La Crosse, Wis. - In game one, Stritch got on the board first. Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit a one-out single and then scored on a double to right centerfield by Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.), putting the Wolves up 1-0.
Pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) cruised through the V-Hawk lineup in the first two innings allowing one hit along the way. The V-Hawks would touch up Calvert for two runs in the bottom of the third off a two-run homerun by Bobby Raasch (Coon Valley, Wis.) to take a 2-1 lead.
Stritch would strike back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning on an opposite field single by Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), which scored Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.), who had singled earlier in the inning. Tesch’s RBI would tie the score at 2-2.
The last three innings of the game would end up swinging in favor of the V-Hawks as Viterbo would post five unanswered runs in the final three frames. The Wolves had pounded out seven hits in the first four innings, but were held hitless the rest of the way.
In game two, Stritch starting pitcher Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) was touched for one run in the bottom of the first inning, but held solid until the fourth when Viterbo added two more to extend their lead to 3-0.
With Thompson keeping the Wolves in reach, the Stritch bats were struggling to get going as the hitters didn’t register a base hit until the fifth inning.
With two on and two out, Moraza came to bat for Stritch and ripped a triple to right center to score Marcus Perleberg (Delafield, Wis.), who was pinch running for Kyle Trewyn after a single by the Wolves’ catcher, and Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) to close the gap to 3-2.
The V-Hawks would end up answering in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting two runs on the board against the Wolves with two-run single from Eric Gruhlke (Kasson, Minn.). Gruhlke’s single would push the score to 5-2 in favor of Viterbo and close the game’s scoring.
With the loss, Stritch now falls to 5-34 overall while Viterbo improves to 21-14. The Wolves will take Thursday off and take to the diamond again on Friday, April 17. Stritch will head to Whiting, Ind. to take on the Calumet College – St. Joseph Crimson Wave in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball matchup. The nine inning game between the two CCAC teams is slated to start at 3 p.m.
Wolves Baseball Sweeps Finlandia
Standish tosses no-hitter; long ball keys wins
Apr. 14, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – Six homeruns and a no-hitter by pitcher Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) led the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over the Finlandia University Lions on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolves knocked off the Lions by scores of 22-0 and 14-4 during the non-conference matchup.
In game one, Standish set the tone from the start as the senior pitcher set the Lions down in order by striking out the side on 13 pitches. After a quiet bottom half of the first inning for Stritch, Standish struck out the first batter of the second inning, mixed in a walk, and then proceeded to strike out the next two hitters to close the top of the inning.
With Standish rolling, the Wolves offense came alive to pound out nine runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the inning. After Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.) got Stritch on the board by being hit on a bases loaded pitch, Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) followed it up with a two-run single.
Later in the inning and up 4-0, third baseman Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit one of his two homeruns on the day, a two-run shot, to push the lead to 6-0. Back-to-back singles by Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) and Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) would then bring up rightfielder Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.). Abromaitis would turn on the Finlandia pitch and send it over the right field wall for his third homerun of the season and extend Stritch’s lead to 9-0.
The Stritch offense would add five more in the third thanks to a lead-off homerun by Cook (2) and another two-run shot off the bat of Moraza. The Wolves would also add eight more runs in the fourth.
The run support would allow Standish (1-4) to cruise as the right-hander would end up pitching the run-ruled shortened game by throwing all five innings, striking out 11 Finlandia hitters, and walking two while registering the no-hitter. The no-hitter is Standish’s first of his collegiate career.
Offensively, the Wolves saw Moraza, Cook, and Roepke each plate four RBI in game one. Meanwhile, Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) was steady from the top of the lineup by adding three hits in five at-bats.
Game two saw the same type of offensive power from the Wolves as Stritch would plate 14 runs in the game thanks in part to three more hits by James and two more homeruns. Abromaitis would add a two-run shot in the third for his fourth homerun of the season while freshman Dean Backman (Whitewater, Wis.) would hit his first as a collegiate, a three-run homerun in the fourth inning.
James and Backman would lead Stritch offensively with three RBI apiece on the day.
The offensive surge gave Stritch pitcher Steve Lenski (Milwaukee, Wis.) plenty of room to work. Making a rare start, the reliever would put in four innings of work, striking out five hitters while allowing four runs on four hits. Jake Lark would close the final two innings of the shortened game by striking out three and not allowing a hit.
The Lions, which struggled against the Wolves, did get some offensive support by catcher Blake Grenier (Marinette, Wis.). Grenier would have one hit in two plate appearances, but add three RBI for Finlandia.
With the wins, the Wolves improve their overall record to 5-32 while the Lions drop to 2-12. Stritch will head for La Crosse, Wis. on Wednesday to take on the Viterbo University V-Hawks. Start time for the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Stritch Baseball Drops Two against Illinois Tech Bats quiet as pitching struggles
Apr. 11, 2009
Chicago, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team struggled on Saturday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks by scores of 5-1 and 3-0.
In game one, Wolves’ starting pitcher Tyler Martin (Pekin, Ill.) struggled as he watched three IIT runs cross home plate in the first inning, all with two outs on the board. Martin would eventually settle down to blank the Scarlet Hawks in the next two innings.
Meanwhile, the Stritch offense, which had four hits in game one, scored their lone run of the game in the third inning as Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) knocked home Mike Ploch (Burlington, Ill.) with a two-out single.
IIT would come back, however, and add a run in each of the next two innings off of Martin (0-7) to push the score to 5-1. The junior right-hander for the Wolves worked around trouble all day as he allowed 10 hits in six innings while striking out five and walking nine batters.
Game two, saw the Wolves get one hit against Scarlet Hawks pitcher James Dodgen (Flagstaff, Ariz.) with the lone Stritch hit coming off the bat of freshman Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.). Dodgen was tough on Stritch hitters as he struck out seven and walked one in seven innings of work.
Stritch starter Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.) pitched well, in his own right, despite yielding 11 hits. The sophomore lefty struck out four while walking just one hitter and allowing three runs.
The Wolves record now falls to 3-32 overall and 1-14 in the conference while the Scarlet Hawks improve to 14-18 overall and 9-8 in the conference. Stritch will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Finlandia University. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m. at Sheridan Park.
Baseball Rally Falls ShortLate scoring run by the Wolves not enough
Apr. 10, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – Down 10-0 going in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves put together a big scoring inning to bring the gap to within two runs, but would eventually fall to the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks, 18-8, on Friday afternoon.
The first five and one half innings looked to be all in favor of Illinois Tech in Friday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball matchup against the Wolves. Stritch would struggle defensively as the Scarlett Hawks would score two in the second and two more in the fourth to put the Wolves in an early 4-0 hole.
With the game still close, the Wolves looked to get on the board, but the bats remained quiet as the Scarlet Hawks put up six runs in the top of the sixth, going up 10-0, and all but dashing the hopes of Stritch. However, the Wolves never gave up.
Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Stritch bats suddenly awoke. Three straight singles off the bats of John Bahm (Justice, Ill.), Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.), and Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.) loaded the bases with nobody out and brought Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) to the plate. Thompson, showing great patience, would end up working a walk out of his at-bat against IIT pitcher Luis Montoya (Chicago, Ill.) to help the Wolves break through on the scoreboard.
With bases still loaded, left fielder Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) punched a single through the infield to plate another Stritch run. After a strikeout by the next Stritch hitter, shortstop Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) would plate another run after getting hit by a pitch. The run that scored would now make the score 10-3 with only one out. The Wolves would go on to score five more runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the right centerfield wall by Trewyn in his second at-bat of the inning.
At the end of the sixth and seven Stritch hits later, the score would be 10-8, but still in favor of IIT.
Unfortunately, the Wolves wouldn’t get any more in the following innings as the Scarlet Hawks would score two more in the seventh and six more in the eighth off of Stritch pitchers Brian Hirschinger (Grafton, Wis.) and John Chengary (Darien, Ill.). The game would close at a final score of 18-8.
After falling on Friday, Stritch dropped to 1-12 in the conference and 3-30 overall. IIT improved to 7-8 in the CCAC and 12-18 overall on the season. Up next, the two teams will match up again on Saturday for a doubleheader that will be played down in Chicago on the campus of Illinois Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Stritch Baseball Struggles against JudsonFive run fifth inning dooms Wolves
Apr. 9, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team played strong in the early goings of Thursday’s matchup with the Judson University Eagles, but a five run fifth inning by Judson was the story of the game as Stritch lost 16-6.The Eagles got on the board first when Judson catcher Tim Victor (Mokena, Ill.) hit a homerun to left field off of Stritch starting pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.). Down 1-0, the Wolves would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out double by Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) that scored Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) from third base.
Judson would put two more runs on the board with a two RBI double by Kevin Fischer (Elgin, Ill.). Stritch would have runners on first and third when Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would get thrown out trying to steal second, however, junior Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) would end up taking home on Tesch’s steal attempt to pull the Wolves back to within one run at 3-2.
Each team would go scoreless in the third inning and then add one apiece in the fourth. The fifth inning would be the marker of the game as Judson would knock Calvert out of the game with a five run inning in which Stritch was hurt by Victor again as the Judson senior would add two more RBI on the day.
The Wolves would respond in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own with RBI from John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) and Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.). However, Judson would add seven more runs over the course of the next four innings before closing the game out.
Stritch’s Austin James led the way for the Wolves with two hits in four at-bats while Victor led the way for Judson with three hits and six total RBI. The loss drops the Wolves to 3-29 overall and 1-11 in conference action while the Eagles improve to 13-15 overall and 8-6 in the conference.
Next up, Stritch will host Illinois Tech on Friday, April 10 for a nine inning game. Originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, the game time has been pushed up to a 1 p.m. start time.

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team lost a non-conference doubleheader to the Lakeland College Muskies on Tuesday afternoon. Celebrating the home opener, the Wolves fell to the Muskies by scores of 17-10 and 18-7.
In the game one slugfest, the two teams combined for 32 hits and 27 runs. Game one also featured eight homeruns with both teams accounting for four each. Lakeland’s Andrew Schartner (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and Cal Post (Appleton, Wis.) each hit two apiece while Stritch’s Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) added two of his own. The Wolves’ Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) also went deep while freshman Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.) added his first collegiate homerun while pinch hitting in the seventh inning.
Game two featured more of the same explosiveness with the teams putting up 30 hits and 25 runs. Lakeland’s David Novak (Algoma, Wis.) and Ryan Polizzi (Woodstock, Ill.) would pace the Muskies with four RBI apiece.
Despite the loss, the Wolves would get strong efforts by Abromaitis, John Bahm (Justice, Ill.), Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.), and Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) as all four would homer in the second game. Bahm and Standish would go back-to-back with their homeruns for the first time this season in the third inning.
The losses put the Wolves at 3-28 overall while the Muskies improve to 9-11-1. Stritch will take to the field again on Thursday, April 9. The Wolves will be hosting the Judson University Eagles in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup at Sheridan Park at 3 p.m.
Stritch Bats Held Quiet in Conference BaseballMartin and Klein pitch well against Panthers
Apr. 4, 2009
Michigan City, Ind. – Despite strong efforts by pitchers Tyler Martin (Pekin, Ill.) and Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.), the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team fell in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to the Purdue University-North Central Panthers by scores of 5-1 and 4-2.
With Martin on the hill in game one, the Panthers would get on the board first in the bottom of the second inning against the junior right hander to go up 1-0. Martin would work two more scoreless innings before PNC would add three in the fifth.
The Stritch offense, which had just three hits, scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would score with one out as Michael Ploch (Burlington, Wis.) would hit a ball to Panthers’ pitcher R.J. Legel (Hammond, Ind.) who would field the ball and overthrow first base allowing Tesch to score and Ploch to advance to second cutting the deficit to 4-1
Martin would get touched up for one more run as the game would close at 5-1. Despite the runs, Martin was strong in scattering 11 hits while striking out seven hitters on the day.
In game two, the Wolves would get another strong outing on the hill as Klein would toe the rubber.
After yielding a run in the first inning to the Panthers, the Wolves’ offense would put a run on the board as Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) would score on a sacrifice fly by Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Panthers would end up taking the lead in the bottom of the third inning by plating two runs off of Klein and pushing the score to 3-1. The Wolves would answer in the top of the fifth inning as Jake Lark would score Roepke from third while reaching on a fielder’s choice. The run would cut the lead to 3-2.
Stritch would allow one more run in the bottom of the fifth as the Panthers extended their lead to 4-2, which would be the final score. The unique storyline to game two is that, despite scoring two runs, the Wolves were held hitless by PNC pitcher Casey Young (Schoolcraft, Mich.). Young would go all seven innings, walking six, striking out six during the no-hitter.
The losses drop the Wolves 3-26 overall and 1-10 in the CCAC. The Panthers move to 16-13 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Stritch will return home to play their home opener against Lakeland College on Tuesday, April 7. The scheduled double header between the Wolves and Muskies is set to start at 2 p.m. at Sheridan Park in Cudahy, Wis.
Wolves Edged Out By PanthersPurdue North Central uses rally to defeat Stritch
Apr. 3, 2009
Michigan City, Ind. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team lost in a close game to the Purdue University-North Central Panthers by a score of 6-4 on Friday evening. In control early on, the Wolves couldn’t stave off a late rally by the Panthers before falling in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup.
The Wolves got the scoring going early on in the top of the third inning. Stritch put together three base hits in the first four at-bats of the inning with singles by Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.), Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.).
With bases loaded and one out, Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) sent an RBI single to right field to score Thompson from third base, giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Stritch would add two more in the inning to go up 3-0 with RBI by Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Stritch pitcher Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) would work his third straight scoreless inning against the Panthers to preserve the lead. Up 3-0, the offense would go back to work in the top of the fourth.
Catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) would lead off the inning with a double down the right field line. The next two hitters in the Stritch lineup would move pinch runner Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) to third base. Roepke would end up scoring on a two-out single by Austin James to give Stritch a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers would get on the board in the bottom of the inning as cleanup hitter Greg Feltner (Indianapolis, Ind.) would hit a leadoff homerun to cut the Stritch lead to 4-1.
While the Stritch offense was held scoreless, PNC would end up chasing Calvert (2-2) from the game in the bottom of the sixth after putting four runs on the board to take a 5-4 lead from the Wolves. The Panthers would add another in the seventh inning to increase the lead to 6-4.
The Wolves, who pounded out 13 hits on the day, got two base hits in the eighth inning, but couldn’t score the runners. Stritch would attempt one last run at Panthers’ pitcher Kevin Scott (Chesterton, Ind.) in the ninth inning.
After a strikeout by James to lead off the ninth, Tesch sent a base hit to right field to put a runner on with one out for the Wolves. After a sharp lineout by Lark, Stritch would be down to the last out with Abromaitis up to bat. The junior outfielder sent a 1-0 pitch to deep right field, but ended up falling short of a game-tying homerun as PNC right fielder Dave Dickerson (Crown Point, Ind.) would make the catch for the final out.
The loss puts the Wolves at 3-24 overall and 1-8 in the conference. The Panthers improve to 14-13 overall and 6-1 in the conference. The two teams will match up again on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.

Stritch Baseball Drops Two to St. XavierKlein solid in game two start despite loss
Mar. 28, 2009
Chicago, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team dropped a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader to St. Xavier University by scores of 9-1 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
After falling in game one, 9-1, the Wolves were looking to salvage the second game of the day. Sophomore lefty Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.) took to the bump for game two and pitched six quality innings for Stritch.
Klein worked a perfect first inning and then stranded two SXU runners during the second inning, but would run into some trouble in the third inning. After giving up back-to-back singles, the Wolves’ starting pitcher hit the Cougars’ Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill.) to load the bases with nobody out. The southpaw would escape the situation unscathed as two pop-outs and a force play at second base would end the threat and keep the score at 0-0.
The Stritch southpaw would again encounter tense times in the fourth inning. The Cougars were able to load bases again, with no outs, against Klein in the bottom of the frame. SXU’s Don Kelly (Oak Lawn, Ill.) would send the next pitch out to shallow right centerfield where Stritch centerfielder Nick Majeske (Milwaukee, Wis.) would make the catch and then promptly fire an on-target throw to home to nab Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill.) at home plate for outs one and two.
Klein would come back and get the next hitter to ground out to end the inning and keep the game tied.
However, SXU finally struck in the bottom of the fifth inning as Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill.), who singled, stole second, and then advanced to third on a bad throw, would end up scoring on a wild pitch from Klein that eluded catcher John Bahm (Justice, Ill.).
Down 1-0, the Wolves had struggled all day at the plate, but put together a scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth as Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) would reach on a two-out single. James would advance to second as Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) was hit on the next pitch by the Cougars’ pitcher, Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill.).
The chance would be rendered null and void and sophomore Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) would ground out to end the inning.
The Cougars would add another run in the bottom of sixth inning on sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Jim Pipolo to go up 2-0.
Down by only two runs, the Wolves’ offense stayed in the game to try and forge a rally. Bahm and Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) would each single with one out to put runners on first and second and force Kehoe from the game.
SXU would replace Kehoe with relief pitcher Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill.). Hurta would retire the first hitter he’d face, but then hit designated hitter Dean Backman (Whitewater, Wis.) to load the bases.
Unfortunately, the rally would fall short as Hurta would strike out Majeske to end the game with bases loaded.
The losses drop the Wolves to 3-23 overall and to 1-7 in the CCAC. Next up, Stritch will head to Elgin, Ill. to take on Judson University on Wednesday, April 1 for a single game that is slated to start at 4 p.m.
Wolves’ Bats Quieted By CougarsOffense held to one hit in conference matchupChicago, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team lost to the St. Xavier University Cougars by a score of 14-1 on Friday evening.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Wolves. Pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) was able to get a first-pitch fly ball down the left field foul line, but Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) was unable to close out the important first out as the ball fell.
The Cougars would use the second chance to their advantage, eventually putting three runs on the board in the opening frame and taking the momentum of the game.
The struggle continued as Stritch would allow 11 more runs to cross the plate during the remainder of the game.
While the Wolves couldn’t stop the bleeding on defense, the bats were held hitless by SXU pitcher Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill.) until the sixth inning. After an error by the Cougars that allowed pinch hitter Nick Majeske (Milwaukee, Wis.) to reach base, pinch hitter John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) broke up Miller’s no-hitter with an RBI double to centerfield to tally the lone Stritch run in the game.
The loss drops the Wolves 3-21 overall and 1-5 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). The win improves the Cougars to 15-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The two teams are slated to match up again on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m., but may be moved up due to possibility of inclement weather.
Stritch Splits With Judson in Conference BaseballWolves come back in game one for win
Mar. 25, 2009
Elgin, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves used determination and a little bit of luck in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball matchup on Wednesday evening against the Judson University Eagles. The Wolves came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 victory in the last inning of play in game one before falling in game two by a score of 5-2.
In Game one, the Eagles got on the board first with an RBI single off the bat of Bret Ehrlich (Bartlett, Ill.) against Stritch pitcher Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.).
From there, Calvert and Judson pitcher Stefan Alinkas (Grove City, Ohio) would shut down both offenses. While Calvert was working strong on the mound, the Wolves put together a good scoring chance in the top of the fifth inning.
Catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) led off the inning with a double and then was replaced for pinch runner Mike Ploch (Burlington, Wis.). Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) put a ball back to Alinkas who promptly threw to third to nab Ploch for the first out of the inning.
With James at first base, Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) singled to right center to put runners on first and second with just one out. However, the scoring threat would be neutralized as Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) would hit a hard ground ball to Judson’s Royce Krueger (Huntley, Ill.) who would step on third and throw to first to complete the double play.
Not giving up, Stritch would generate a successful rally attempt in the top of the seventh.
Pinch hitter Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) singled to left and was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Trewyn. James would follow up the sacrifice attempt with a base knock putting runners at the corners with one out for Stritch.
Looking for a spark, Wolves head coach Michael Zolecki called for a squeeze play with Roepke up to bat and Tesch on third. With Tesch racing down the line on the pitch, Roepke failed on the bunt attempt, but Judson catcher Tim Victor (Mokena, Ill.) couldn’t handle the pitch, allowing Tesch to safely score on the play and tie the game at 1-1.
With the score tied, Roepke would end up lining out for the second out. Austin James, who had moved up to second on the squeeze play, would end up moving to third on a two-out single by Nick Moraza. James would score during the next at-bat as Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) would single him home to give Stritch the 2-1 lead and close out the inning’s scoring.
With the lead in hand, Calvert (2-1) would work a 1-2-3 bottom half of the seventh to claim the win. The junior right hander would go all seven for Stritch, yielding one unearned run on eight hits while walking one batter and fanning four.
Stritch would fall in game two, 5-2, as the Judson would tally 12 hits against Troy Engibous (Waukesha, Wis.) and Brian Hirchinger (Grafton, Wis.). Meanwhile, the Stritch bats were quieted as they were able to notch a lone hit on Eagles pitching.
The split gives the Wolves a 3-20 overall record and 1-4 in CCAC play. The Eagles move to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in conference.
Next up, the Wolves will head to Chicago, Ill. to take on Saint Xavier University on Friday, March 27 and again on Saturday. Friday’s nine inning game will start at 3 p.m. while the Saturday doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.

Joliet, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team was defeated by the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints, 10-0, in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) season-opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves struggled in all phases against the Fighting Saints. Stritch allowed 10 runs on 14 hits while committing four errors on the field and tallying just three hits at the plate. The three hits generated by Stritch were off the bats of Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.), Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.), and a double by John Bahm (Justice, Ill.)
The loss to St. Francis drops the Wolves to 2-17 and 0-1 in the CCAC. The Fighting Saints improve to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The two teams will matchup again on Sunday for a double header. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.
Wolves Baseball Knocks Off PiratesStellar pitching and timely hitting lead to winMar. 18, 2009
Georgetown, Texas – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves Baseball team used timely hitting and strong pitching by Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) to defeat the Southwestern University Pirates, 9-4, on Wednesday evening.
Stritch opened up their offensive attack early. Loading the bases with two outs, designated hitter Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) worked a walk out of Southwestern pitcher Kyle Foreman (Georgetown, Texas) to bring home Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) and put the Wolves up 1-0.
After holding the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the first, the Wolves would get right back to work, bringing home four more runs off of Foreman (0-1). Catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) would open the inning with a single to left field and land at second with the help of sacrifice bunt by Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.). Trewyn would eventually score on a one out, opposite field hit by the right-handed hitting James.
Up 2-0, Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) would plate another run with a single to the left side. With runners on the corners now, Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) would complete the scoring with an opposite field hit to score two, putting Stritch up 5-0 after two innings.
The Wolves would score again in the fourth inning, posting two runs off of a wild pitch from Southwestern’s Eric Ruff (Bacliff, Texas) and a sacrifice fly from Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.).
The Pirates would eventually get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing home two runs off of Calvert (1-1) with a two RBI single by Nick Ashford (Red Oak, Texas). SWU would also log another run off of Calvert in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Michael Murphy (Houston, Texas).
Still up 7-3, the Wolves would tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lark, who was 4-5 on the day, opened the inning with a double to left center. He would eventually move to third on a wild pitch and then score off an RBI ground out off the bat of Sarauer. Moraza, who walked earlier in the inning, resided at third base as Abromaitis came to the plate. The Wolves’ right fielder would follow his sacrifice fly from his previous at-bat with a double down the right field line to score Moraza.
On the mound, Calvert continued to work strong and quickly, before running into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. Having yielded eight hits and just three runs, Calvert would eventually be lifted after giving up a lead-off double in the inning. Exiting with a 9-3 lead, Calvert finished with 6 strikeouts and two walks before giving way to reliever Geoff Standish.
In four innings of work, Standish was strong in relief. The senior right hander worked four innings of solid relief as he would allow just one run on two hits, walk two, and strike out five Pirate hitters to close out the win.
At the plate, besides Lark’s four hits, Abromaitis and James each added two hits while Abromaitis, Saurer, and Moraza would each bring home two RBI in the game.
The win improves the Wolves to 2-16 overall and drops the Pirates to 12-13. Stritch will return home for a day off before heading to Joliet, Ill. to open the conference season against the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints on Saturday and Sunday. Originally slated to be a home game for Stritch, field conditions have moved the weekend series to Joliet. First pitch on Saturday will be at 1 p.m.
Wolves Lose To TigersStritch hitters held at bay during lossMar. 17, 2009
San Antonio, Texas – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team was held at bay offensively against the Trinity University Tigers during a 7-1 loss.
Stritch hitters had a rough night against Tigers hurler Noah Solomon (Austin, Texas) as Solomon would fan 13 hitters during eight innings of work. The Wolves weren’t able to get on the board until the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles by Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) and Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.). Lark had a good night at the plate going 2-3.
Defensively, the Wolves received a strong start from freshman Troy Engibous (Muskego, Wis.). Making his first start on the mound as a collegiate pitcher, Engibous (0-1) scattered seven hits over the course of five innings while striking out five and walking just two despite allowing five runs.
The loss drops the Wolves to 1-16 on the season while the Tigers improve to 10-13. Stritch will head off to Georgetown, Texas where they will face the Southwestern University Pirates. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Stritch Baseball StrugglesTeam falls to Nebraska Wesleyan and Huston-TillotsonMar. 16, 2009
Austin, Texas – The struggles continued for the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves Baseball team as the program suffered losses to Nebraska Wesleyan University and Huston-Tillotson University on Tuesday afternoon. In the first game, Stritch lost to NWU by a score of 13-9 and was blanked in game two by HTU, 13-0.
Against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Wolves couldn’t overcome 13 runs on 12 hits by the NWU lineup. Despite being down most of the game, Stritch put up a strong effort in the fourth inning to try and come back.
Down 7-1 entering the bottom half, the Stritch offense put a rally together to get back into the game. Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the inning off with a walk. With Moraza on first, designated hitter John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) roped a double to right center to score Moraza. Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) followed the Bahm double with a walk to put runners on first and second.
Michael Ploch (Burlington, Wis.) would enter as a pinch runner for Trewyn. The combo of Ploch at first and Bahm at second would each advance a base on a wild pitch from the NWU pitchers, bringing up pinch hitter Phil Cook (Milwaukee, Wis.). Cook would respond with his first collegiate hit, knocking home both Bahm and Ploch with a single up the middle.
With the score 7-4, Jon Roepke (Waukesha, Wis.) would walk, putting runners on first and second and still nobody out. Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. Needing a big hit, Austin James (Milwaukee, Wis.) would follow Tesch by sending a triple, with two strikes, down the right field line to score Cook and Roepke.
The inning would come to an end after a strikeout by Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.) and a ground out by Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.). However, the lead had been cut by the Wolves to 7-6.
The one run deficit would be the closest Stritch could get as Nebraska Wesleyan scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning. The final score would eventually land at 13-9 despite a strong comeback attempt by the Wolves in the seventh inning as they posted two runs during the inning.
In the second half of the day, Stritch was outslugged by the Huston-Tillotson University Rams by a score of 13-0.
Despite yielding 13 runs on 10 hits, a bright spot on the day for Stritch came as Marcus Perleberg (Delafield, Wis.) tallied his first collegiate hit with a single down the leftfield line. Freshman relief pitcher John Chengary (Darien, Ill.) made his first appearance of the season for the Wolves as well. Chengary would allow a run on a base hit, but the lefty would come back to strike out the next two hitters to close the inning.
The losses drop the Wolves to 1-15 on the season. Up next, Stritch will Trinity University in a nine inning game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Wolves Baseball Can’t Overcome BearcatsPitching struggles in game one lossMar. 8, 2009
Owensboro, Ky. – After falling in game one of a Sunday double header against Brescia University by a score of 13-3, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team struggled in game two, falling to the Bearcats 4-1.
In the 13-3 loss, the Wolves pitching staff was hit hard yielding 13 runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Tyler Martin (Pekin, Ill.) suffered the bulk of the damage during his 3 1/3 innings of work. Martin (0-3) allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits despite issuing just two walks and striking out four Bearcat hitters.
The hitting and fielding also struggled throughout the game. The offense could muster just four hits on day with two of the four hits coming off the bat of Stritch right fielder Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.). The defense allowed three errors during the game as well.
In game two, the Wolves pitching settled down as starter Justin Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) worked efficiently on the mound.
After working a scoreless first inning, the Bearcats were able to put two runs on the board against the Wolves with two hits and an error by the Stritch defense to take a 2-0 lead. Calvert would then go back to work to hold Brescia scoreless the next two innings.
Heading into the top of the fifth inning, Stritch designated hitter Dean Backman (Whitewater, Wis.) led off with his first collegiate hit, a single to centerfield. After advancing to second on a wild pitch by Brescia pitcher Eric Castle (Groveport, Ohio), Backman would end up scoring on an RBI single from shortstop Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Down 2-1, Stritch wouldn’t be able to overcome the deficit as Brescia would tack on single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings eventually closing the game at 4-1. Calvert (0-1), pitched well for the Wolves despite the four runs on the board. The junior pitcher struck out five hitters while issuing two walks with only one of the four runs being an earned run.

Wolves Baseball Falls to Brescia UniversityLate comeback in game two falls just short
Mar. 7, 2009
Owensboro, Ky. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team fell in a Saturday double header to the Brescia University Bearcats by scores of 6-4 and 9-8. Despite the losses, the Wolves never quit battling.
Stritch struck quickly in game one by posting two runs in the third inning off an RBI triple by Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and an RBI single by Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.). The offense would strike again in the top of the fourth inning as designated hitter John Bahm (Justice, Ill.) struck a blow with a homerun (1) over the right field wall, his first of his collegiate career.
After leading 3-1 entering the fifth inning of play, Stritch starting pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) ran into some trouble. Calvert (0-3) would end up allowing three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another two in the bottom half of the sixth inning before exiting.
Now down 6-3, the Wolves attempted to make a comeback. Pinch hitter Dean Backman (Whitewater, Wis.) would draw a walk and then give way to pinch runner Nick Majeske (Milwaukee, Wis.). Majeske would work his way around the bases and end up scoring on a balk by Bearcats pitcher Ronney Borjas (Caracas, Venezuela). That would be all the scoring that would come as the game would close at 6-4.
In game two, Stritch found itself battling again to stay in the game. The Bearcats knocked out the Wolves starting pitcher, Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) after the second inning. Standish (0-3) would leave after yielding five runs in two innings and hitting three batters.
Despite being down 5-0, the offense came roaring right back in the top of the third. With two outs, the Wolves had Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) at second base after he opened the inning with a single. With Abromaitis at second, Jake Lark came through with an RBI double to left field to score the run. Lark would later score on a fielding error by Brescia off the bat of Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.). Sarauer would then score on a wild pitch. At the close of the inning, Stritch was down just 5-3.
Stritch pitcher Troy Engibous (Muskego, Wis.) would replace Standish in the bottom of the third and hold the Bearcats scoreless. However, in the fourth, the freshman ran into trouble, giving up five hits and four runs.
With three innings left to play, the offense continued to chip away at the Brescia lead while freshman reliever Steve Lenski (Milwaukee, Wis.) kept the opposing hitters at bay.
John Bahm, who was hot at the plate all day long (4-6, 3 RBI), came through with an RBI double in the fourth inning to score two runs, bringing the score to 9-5. From there, Lenski went to work. The freshman would allow just one hit over the course of the next three innings.
Entering the seventh inning, the Wolves offense made a run at the Bearcat lead. Micah Thompson (New Prairie, Wis.) led off the inning with a double and was followed up by a walk from Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.). After Bahm struck out, junior catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) came up big by sending a three-run homerun over the right centerfield wall to cut the lead to 9-8. The comeback would eventually fall short as the Wolves could score no more in the inning.
With the losses, the Wolves now fall to 1-9 overall. The two teams will face each other again on Sunday. First pitch for the Sunday double header has been moved up to 10 a.m.
Stritch Baseball Falls to Indiana-SoutheastWolves strand 18 runners in Saturday double header.Feb. 28, 2009
New Albany, Ind. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Indiana University – Southeast Grenadiers by scores of 3-1 and 6-3. The losses to the Grenadiers were a culmination of a Wolves offense struggling to score base runners.
Game one of the two-game set turned into a pitchers’ duel between Wolves’ pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) and the Grenadiers’ Kris Eschman (Louisville, Ky.). Both hurlers held their respective opponents scoreless into the fifth inning going pitch-for-pitch with each other.
In the fifth, IUS broke through first. Calvert (0-2) would open the inning with a ground ball to Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) off the bat of Jeremy Boehnlin (Louisville, Ky.) that Sarauer mishandled. Boehnlin would steal second two pitches later.
With Boehnlin on second, Calvert would end up issuing a walk to Ryan Jones (Jefferson, Ind.) to put runners at first and second. Jordan Pass (Louisville, Ky.) would follow the walk up with a base hit down the third base line. With bases full and nobody out, Calvert did his best to push Stritch through the situation.
Calvert proceeded to get the first out of the inning by striking out the Grenadiers’ Kyle Lenn (Newburg, Ind.). Looking for a big play, the Wolves’ pitcher was able to induce a ground ball of the bat IUS’ Jeff Klump (Haubstadt, Ind.) to short stop Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) to potentially end the inning. Moraza would make a flip feed to Sarauer at second to get Pass out at second for out number two, but Sarauer would misfire with the throw on the potential double play out to first baseman Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.), allowing two runs to score.
IUS would add one more to go up 3-0 heading into the sixth. The Wolves would respond in the top half of the inning when Eschman (1-1) would issue a bases loaded walk to catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) to score Jake Lark (Germantown, Wis.), who had opened the inning with a double.
However, the Wolves were not able to muster anymore offense the rest of the way.
Game two saw Stritch starting Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) grind through four innings of work.
After giving up a run during the first inning, Standish (0-2) came back to retire the side with striking out three of the Grenadier hitters. The senior stayed settled down through the second and third innings to blank IUS.
However, in the fourth, Standish and the Wolves defense would struggle, allowing four runs to cross the plate. The Stritch offense, which had runners on base all day, struggled to find the key hit, finding themselves down 5-0 entering the sixth inning.
The Wolves eventually broke through in the sixth after the first out in the inning. Moraza took first base after being hit by a pitch from the hand of IUS pitcher, Alex Sedam (North Vernon, Ind.). Thompson followed the hit-by-pitch up with a walk to put runners on first and second.
With one out and two on, Trewyn followed with a walk to load the bases for freshman designated hitter, John Bahm (Justice, Ill.). Bahm would come through with his first hit as a collegiate player, sending an RBI single to right field to score Moraza from third.
Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would follow with and RBI single. Marcus Perleberg (Delafield, Wis.), who was inserted as a pinch runner for Trewyn, would close out the scoring when IUS tried to pick him off at third base, only to throw the ball away.
The game would end with Stritch falling 6-3.
The Wolves were strong at getting base hits on the day as they had 15 hits between the two games. However, the key hit was the struggle as Stritch could only score four of the 22 total runs they had on base all day long.
The losses drop the Wolves to 1-5 while the Grenadiers improved to 2-5 on the year. The two teams will matchup once again on Sunday for another two-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. EST.
Wolves Split With HornetsStritch Baseball goes 1-1 on the day.Feb. 22, 2009
St. Louis, Mo. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team split a double header with the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves rode two three-run innings to take the first game 6-5 before falling to the Hornets in game two by a score of 10-2.
In the opening inning of game one, both teams went down in order. Opening the second inning, the Wolves’ offense struck first. Andy Abromaitis (Oak Creek, Wis.) led off the inning with a single to right field. Nick Moraza (Milwaukee, Wis.) came up to bat next for Stritch and doubled a shot to the gap in right centerfield scoring Abromaitis all the way from first base to put the Wolves up 1-0.
With Moraza on second base, catcher Kyle Tewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) roped an outside pitch from Hornets’ pitcher Craig Floyd (Chesterfield, Mo.) down the right field line to double home Moraza. Two batters later, Micah Thompson (North Prairie, Wis.) sent a one-out single to the left centerfield gap to score courtesy runner Nick Majeske (Milwaukee, Wis.) to put Stritch up 3-0 before the end of the inning.
The Hornets would respond with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning off of Wolves’ pitcher Andy Klein (Cudahy, Wis.) to make the score 3-1.
Klein cruised through the first three innings by using pinpoint location on his fastball and staying ahead of hitters. The Wolves’ sophomore pitcher ran into some trouble in the fourth inning. After issuing a lead-off walk to Mike Luczak (Arnold, Mo.), Jon Harvey (St. Louis, Mo.) hit what would end up being a RBI triple after the ball got hung up in the blustering winds. Harvey would later score on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
Harris-Stowe would eventually take the lead in the next inning with an RBI single by Travis Parker (O’Fallon, Mo.). However, the Wolves’ offense would come to life in the top of the sixth inning. Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) would lead the inning off with a double and advance to third on an error by HSSU’s Harvey on a ground ball off the bat of Abromaitis.
Moraza would come to bat in another key situation for the Wolves coming through with an RBI single to score Sarauer giving Stritch the 4-3 lead. Trewyn would single home Abromaitis while Thompson would finish the inning with another RBI single to give the Wolves the 6-4 lead.
Brian Hirschinger (Grafton, Wis.) would come in for the Wolves for the two-inning save yielding one run on two hits to seal the win for Klein (1-0) and the Wolves. Offensively, Moraza, Trewyn, and Thompson would combine for six hits and six runs batted in during the win.
Game two saw the Wolves fall to the Hornets by a score of 10-2. Stritch pitcher Tyler Martin (Pelcin, Ill.) fell victim to four errors by the defense and illness as the junior pitcher battled through five innings yielding six earned runs. The offense, which generated eight hits in game one, could only muster three in game two.
The Wolves record moves to 1-3 overall on the day while the Hornets move to 6-2. Next up, Stritch is slated to head to New Albany, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 28 to play a four-game set over the weekend against Indiana University – Southeast.
Wolves’ Baseball Falls to Harris-StoweErrors prove costly in season-opener.Feb. 21, 2009
St. Louis, Mo. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves baseball team fell in their season-opening double header on the road to Harris-Stowe State University. The Wolves fell by scores of 4-2 and 9-4 on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, Stritch struck first by knocking home two runs in the top of the first inning. Cody Tesch (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) both came home during the opening inning to put the Wolves up 2-0.
The Hornets responded in the bottom of the inning putting two runs on the board to tie the game at 2-2 with Ace Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) and Travis Parker (O’Fallen, Mo.) scoring for HSSU.
The Hornets would put runs up in each of the next innings against Wolves’ pitcher Jason Calvert (Milwaukee, Wis.) to go on for the 4-2 win. Despite three errors by the defense, Calvert pitched well for Stritch as the junior yielded just one earned run on the day on five hits.
In game two, the Wolves looked to turn things around. Coming out of the gates strong, the Stritch offense put up four runs in the opening inning on the Hornets. The offensive surge was highlighted by Wolves’ catcher Kyle Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis.) who hit a three-run double into the right-centerfield gap to give Stritch the lead.
Stritch Pitcher Geoff Standish (New Berlin, Wis.) would yield one run in the bottom of the inning to the Harris-Stowe hitters, but would settle down until the fourth inning.
The Wolves entered the fourth inning up 4-1 over the Hornets. Standish started to work into trouble during the inning as the defense had an error and Standish would hit two batters, eventually leading to a six-run fourth inning. The Hornets’ Jon Harvey (St. Louis, Mo.) led the way with a two-run homerun to right field that swung the momentum.
The six runs posted in the inning by HSSU would go unanswered by Stritch as the offense fell quiet the rest of the way in what would be an eventual 9-4 loss.
With the loss, the Wolves fall to 0-2 and the Hornets improve to 5-1. The two teams will take the field again for another double header on Sunday with the first game starting at 12 p.m.
