Stritch Men’s Soccer Suffers Setback Against Robert MorrisWolves drop second straight match

Oct. 17, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – As if winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men’s soccer crown isn’t tough enough, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves just saw their road get a little tougher. On Saturday afternoon, Stritch suffered a setback to their championship hopes as the Wolves dropped a conference match to the Robert Morris University Eagles by a final score of 3-1.

Looking for some early offense, the Wolves were able to generate eight shots during the first period of play, but could never quite get in position for quality shots as only one of the shots landed on net. While Stritch was misfiring, the Eagles were able to take advantage of their four shots on goal, eventually taking a 1-0 lead after the 20-minute mark as RMU’s Lazare Nignan (Oaugadougou, Burkinda Faso) scored the match’s first goal.

Needing the defense to hold up so the offense and find their mark, the exact opposite would happen for the Wolves as the Eagles would score a little over six minutes into the second half off the foot of Eric Herrera (Chicago, Ill.). Herrera would take a pass from Peter Gallagher (Buncrana, Ireland) before putting it in the net, pushing the Wolves into a 2-0 hole.

Things wouldn’t get any better as Herrera would tally another goal against the Wolves seven minutes later, effectively putting Stritch into a 3-0 hole.

Stritch would eventually crack through on the scoreboard as David Perich (Perth, Australia) would score his third goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Perich goal would end up being too little too late as the game would end at 3-1.

For the Wolves, the loss is the second straight 3-1 loss they’ve suffered as it also drops the overall record to 9-5-1. The loss also places the Wolves at 4-3 in the CCAC, dropping them to third in the conference. The victory improves Robert Morris University to 5-7-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the CCAC.

With Saturday marking the final regular season home match for the Wolves, Stritch will now head to Notre Dame, Ind. to take on Holy Cross University on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Topped By JudsonWolves fall in battle of conference leaders

Oct. 14, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – In what was one of the premiere matchups on the 2009 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men’s soccer schedule, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves and Judson Eagles battled, on Wednesday night, for the conference’s top spot. Unfortunately, it would be the Eagles coming out on top defeating the Wolves by a score of 3-1.

The Wolves ended up in a hole early as the Eagles managed to score the match’s first goal in the opening 10 minutes of play. Judson’s William Zardetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) put a header on a corner kick from Gustavo Oliveira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), sending the ball past Stritch goal keeper Max Leblond (Lille, France) to make the score 1-0. Things would settle back down as the half would end at the 1-0 score.

Play would resume in the second half with both teams playing tough, but it would be Judson that would end up on the board again. The Eagles’ Sven Moeller (Freiensteinau, Germany) would score the second goal of the match with an assist coming from Martin Khoshaba (Elgin, Ill.). Moeller’s goal would come in the match’s 63rd minute of play.

Things didn’t get any better for the Wolves as the Eagles would score again five minutes later as Rafa Heck (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) would added a third goal for Judson putting Stritch in a 3-0 deficit with just over 20 minutes left to play.

Stritch, which managed five shots on goal on nine overall shots, would break through on the board three minutes later as Andy Collins (Burnley, England) would cut the Judson lead to 3-1 with his fifth goal of the season.

Despite the goal by Collins, the Wolves would not be able to generate anymore offense as Stritch would fall by the score of 3-1. A physical match that lived up to its billing, the two teams combine for 37 fouls in the match with the Eagles committing 25 of them.

The loss drops the Wolves to 9-4-1 overall and to 4-2 in the conference also knocking Stritch from the top spot in the CCAC. The win sends Judson to 10-1 overall and to 4-1 in the conference, moving them to first in the CCAC ahead of the Wolves.

Up next, the Wolves will take on Robert Morris University on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park. Saturday will mark the final home game of the regular season for Stritch and will also be “Senior Day” as the Wolves will celebrate the contributions of the team’s six seniors.

Stritch Men’s Soccer Squeaks Out Win Against TrojansLate goal by Andy Collins sends Wolves to victory

Oct. 10, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team managed to squeak out a win on Saturday afternoon against the Trinity International University Trojans. Playing in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup, the Wolves were able to score a late goal, courtesy of Andy Collins (Burnley, Englad), to beat the Trojans by a final of 1-0.

In the first period of play, the Stritch offense was slow to get moving as the, currently, last place Trojans were able to keep some pressure on the Wolves’ defense. Trinity International was able to get 4 shots off, two on net, while Stritch only generated one shot in the period. Despite the lack of offense by both teams, each was physical with the other as the half ended with each team having committed eight fouls apiece.

Entering the second half of play, the Wolves started to get into an offensive rhythm as they were able to increase their shot production to four during the period.

Perhaps the most important shot came with seven minutes remaining in the match. Wolves’ captain Paul Dugdale (Burnley, England) possessed the ball to the left of Trojan goalkeeper Karl Lindblad (Cottage Grove, Minn.). Dugdale, running out of room near the back line was able to feed the ball across the goal mouth where Lindblad was able to get a touch, but not enough of one to stop the ball, allowing Collins to send home the game-winning goal, his fourth goal of the year.

Despite being outshot in the match nine to five, the Wolves were able to generate enough offense to push their 9-3-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the CCAC, good for the top spot. The loss keeps the Trojans winless at 0-13, and 0-5 in conference play. The Wolves will continue their home stand next Wednesday as the team will take on Judson University at 5 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park.

Oct. 8, 2009

Palos Heights, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team rolled to a road victory on Thursday night over Trinity Christian College. Playing in what was originally scheduled to be a home game for Stritch, the venue made no difference as the Wolves dismantled the Trolls by a final score of 3-1.

Ben Allen (Whalley, England) got Stritch on the board first just ten minutes into the match. Allen, the Wolves’ leading goal-scorer, would put an initial shot on the TCC net after a nice pass from Sean Hughes (Blackburn, England), but it would we stopped by the Trolls’ Andrew Boersma (Clive, Iowa). Boersma couldn’t secure the ball as Allen would score on the rebound to net his sixth goal of the season, giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Later in the half, Stritch would add another, this time off the foot of the team’s second-leading scorer, Paul Dugdale (Burnley, England). The Wolves would draw a foul inside the box against TCC’s Mohamed Mohamed (Burbank, Ill.) setting up a penalty kick. Dugdale, who was 1-1 on penalty kicks this season, notched another goal giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead, closing out the first period scoring.

The 2-0 score would remain the same until the 65-minute mark as the Trolls’ Dave Tadla (Orland Park, Ill.) would cut the Stritch lead in half with his first goal of the game.

Despite the deficit being cut in half, Dugdale and the Wolves would respond with more offensive pressure following the TCC goal. Just three minutes after Tadla’s goal, the Wolves would take back the two-goal lead. With the Wolves pressuring, TCC’s Mohamed would be called for another foul inside the box, drawing yet another penalty kick in favor of Stritch. Dugdale would extend his streak to 3-3 on the season in penalty kicks sending his second goal of the game, fourth of the season, past Boersma.

With the win over the Trolls, the Wolves improved their overall record to 8-3-1 and extended their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) record to 3-1. With the loss, the Trolls drop to 5-7 and 1-3. Stritch will take to the field again this weekend as they’ll welcome Trinity International to Uihlein Soccer Park. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. between the Wolves and Trojans.

Men’s Soccer Defeats Olivet NazarenePerich strong in win for Stritch

Oct. 3, 2009

Bourbonnais, Ill. – After falling on Wednesday in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup to Calumet-St. Joseph, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team rebounded on Saturday afternoon to claim a 2-1 win over the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers in a CCAC matchup.

The Wolves got things going first just over 20 minutes into the match. Paul Dugdale (Burnley, England) would notch the game’s first goal by drilling a shot from 25-yards out that was misplayed by Tigers’ goalkeeper Kenny Huber (Grand Blanc, Mich.). For Dugdale, it was his second goal of the season. The goal by Dugdale was assisted on by David Perich (Perth, Australia).
Dugdale would return the favor back to Perich as he would score the match’s second goal at the 58-minute mark. Dugdale would feed a ball from 20-yards out that would find its way to Ben Allen (Whalley, England) who would dish the ball off to Perich allowing him to put the ball past Huber, giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

ONU would get on the board with their lone goal coming from Josh Ayers (Colfax, Ill.). Despite the goal by Ayers, the Wolves would hold onto the 2-1 lead for the win.
Perich paced the way for Stritch in the win, logging three total points in the win.

With the win, Stritch improves to 7-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCAC. The loss drops Olivet Nazarene to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Wolves will face the Trinity Christian College Trolls on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Leblond Garners National Men’s Soccer AwardStritch goalie also wins weekly conference award

Oct. 1, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer goalkeeper, Max Leblond (Lille, France), has been named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. While garnering national honors, Leblond has also been named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Leblond has been on a hot streak for the Wolves recently. During the previous week, he helped lead Stritch to a 0-0 tie with Carthage College and then played a major role in a 1-0 upset win over the No. 20 St. Xavier University this past weekend. Against the Cougars, Leblond had the play of the game, making a key stop on a penalty kick with a full-body dive to his left to preserve a 0-0 score. Just five minutes after Leblond’s big save, the Wolves would end up scoring the eventual game-winning goal.

After starting the season at 1-2, Leblond has helped Stritch go on a six-match unbeaten streak. In his last 368 minutes of play, he has not allowed a goal while registering three consecutive shutouts along the way. The Wolves’ netminder currently ranks No. 25 in the nation in goals against average with .076.

“Max’s quick development is definitely showing as he has gained the confidence of the whole team,” head coach Jeff Bohacek said. “The boys in front of Max truly trust him to make saves. What’s really special is that he makes the easy saves look easy, and the big ones look even better.”

The strong play by Leblond has led the Wolves to a 6-2-1 record in the team’s first nine games of the 2009 season. Stritch is also sitting at 1-0 in the early part of the CCAC season with the win over St. Xavier. The team will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they’ll play at conference match in Whiting, Ind. against Calumet College of St. Joseph. Start time for Wednesday’s match is set for 4 p.m.

Wolves Up-end #20 Cougars Tight defense and timely goal net win over Top-25 team

Sept. 26, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – In what was believed to be a physical match entering play on Saturday, neither the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves or St. Xavier University Cougars men’s soccer teams gave reason to believe any less during Saturday’s collegiate soccer match. In the end of the 90 minute, physically strenuous Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup, it would be the Wolves finishing atop the No. 20-ranked Cougars by a final of 1-0.

The first half of action was proof enough that both teams were willing to embrace a physical style of play as the teams combined for 13 total fouls during the opening period. It would be the fouls that would end up deciding the game as two important ones ended up coming in the final five minutes of the half.

With SXU pressuring in the Stritch box, the Cougars were able to draw a foul, initiating a penalty kick opportunity. The Cougar’s second leading scorer, Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland) drew the call to take the kick with the chance to put the Wolves into a hole. However, Stritch goalkeeper Max Leblond (Lille, France) had other things in mind as the Wolves’ netminder stopped Palar’s attempt cold with a diving stop to his left.

After a strong play by Leblond, the Wolves took advantage of the new-found momentum, using it to apply their own pressure on the offensive end against the Cougars. As he’s done most of this season, Elliot Magnant (Plymouth, Wis.) got the ball inside of the SXU goal box and would draw a foul, giving the Wolves their own penalty kick opportunity. Wolves head coach Jeff Bohacek would call upon his senior captain, Paul Dugdale (Burnley, England), to take the shot. Dugdale would not disappoint as he’d net his first goal of the season, putting Stritch up 1-0 just before the end of the half.

In the second half, it was the Wolves defense that came through in a strong way. Clinging to a 1-0 margin, the Stritch defense continued its physical play as Leblond continued to shine for the Wolves. The freshman goalkeeper made three key saves in the half to not only lead Stritch to the win, but also extended his scoreless streak to 368 minutes and recorded his third consecutive shutout.

All totaled, the two teams combined for 40 fouls in the match, seven yellow cards, and one red card. Offensively, each team logged 13 total shots apiece with Stritch landing three on net while St. Xavier landed five on net.

With the victory in the conference opener the Wolves improve to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCAC. With the loss, the 20th-ranked Cougars drop to 5-3 overall and down to 1-1 in the conference. Up next, Stritch will head to Whiting, Ind. to take on Calumet St. Joseph’s on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The match between the Wolves and Crimson Wave is slated to start at 4 p.m.

Stritch Men’s Soccer Defeats ViterboStrong first half leads way to win

Sept. 13, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves defeated the Viterbo University V-Hawks on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, in a non-conference men’s soccer matchup. The Wolves used a strong first period of play and stellar defense in the second to take the win.

In the first period of play, the V-Hawks would get on the board first, putting Stritch in a 1-0 hole 20 minutes into the game. Viterbo’s Teague Mitchell (Stillwater, Minn.) took a point-blank shot on Wolve’s goalkeeper Max Leblond (Lille, France), while Leblond was able to make the stop, he was unable to secure the ball as the V-Hawk’s Jamie Robertson (Langho, England) managed to send the rebound to the back of the net.

Despite being down, the Wolves would respond seven minutes later. Ben Allen (Whalley, England) would cross over the midline, sending the ball to the middle of the field, towards the Viterbo goal. As the ball reached near the goal, Stritch’s Elliot Magnant (Plymouth, Wis.) got to it before the defense could, eventually sending home his first goal of the season and tying the score at 1-1.
With just five minutes remaining in the half, Stritch would cap off the game’s scoring. This time, the Wolves’ leading scorer, Andy Collins (Burnley, England) would put in the eventual game-winning goal with another assist from Allen.

Stritch would hold on to the 2-1 lead in the second half but playing stellar defense and holding the V-Hawks to just one shot in the period.

With the win, the Wolves move to 4-2 overall while the V-Hawks drop to 3-4 on the season. Stritch will get set to head out to Fayette, Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 19 where they’ll face Upper Iowa University. Game time for the matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Allen Leads Wolves Over PioneersForward nets two goals in win

Sept. 12, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – Ben Allen (Clayton le Moors, England) netted two goals on Saturday afternoon to lead the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Northland International University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.

After playing through a scoreless first half, the Wolves fired up the offensive pressure in the second period. Stritch, which generated nine shots in the first half, put another seven on the board in the second and would eventually crack through the scoring first. In the 67th minute of play, Allen would tally his first goal off a pass from Adam Brown (Whalley, England), giving the Wolves a 1-0 victory.

Allen would eventually give Stritch a two-goal cushion just over 10 minutes later. After a misplay by the Pioneers’ defense, Allen was hovering around the goal to jump on the defensive mistake and put his second of the game past NIU goalkeeper David Bartholomew (Allentown, Penn.), giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.
NIU would eventually get on the board against Stritch about a minute after Allen’s second goal. With a sudden offensive rush, the Pioneers’ Micah Herron (Dededo, Guam) took a pass from Lee Chatfield (Burt Lake, Mich.) to score their lone goal.

When it was all said and done, the Wolves would hold out for the win and would also outshoot the pioneers by 16-7 in the match. The win moves Stritch to 3-2 overall while the Pioneers would fall to 1-3-1.

Up next, the Wolves will host Viterbo University on Sunday. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Wolves Win Overtime ThrillerPerich nets game-winner

Sept. 9, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – David Perich (Perth, Australia) propelled the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team to a thrilling overtime victory against the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees. Perich’s game-winning goal gave the Wolves a 2-1 victory on Wednesday evening over the Fighting Bees.

While it was the Wolves that controlled the game from the onset, it was the Fighting Bees that would get on the board first in the opening period. Jackson Teeling (Waukee, Iowa) sent a corner kick into play, finding Simon Murphy (Sebestopol, Australia) in front of the goal mouth for a header, putting the ball past Stritch goalkeeper Max Leblond (Lille, France). Murphy’s goal, his second of the year, put the Wolves down 1-0.

After outshooting the Fighting Bees 6-1 in the first half despite being down, the Wolves came out with the same fire. As the defense played stout, the offense generated another six shots in the second half of play. While the Stritch offense was able to generate shots, only two of them made were on net during the half. With time winding down, the ability to tie the game was drawing faint for the Wolves.

Never giving up, the Wolves’ offense eventually broke through. With one minute remaining in the second half, Andy Collins (Burnley, England) netted his second goal of the season off an assist by Niklas Dagervik (Uppsala, Sweden), tying the game at 1-1 and eventually sending the game to extra periods.

Enter the overtime frame and Perich’s game-winner. Just three minutes into the extra frame, Stritch’s Elliot Magnant (Plymouth, Wis.) hustled after a loose ball that the St. Ambrose goalkeeper, Justin Harper (Davenport, Iowa), was attempting to retrieve. It would be Magnant that beat the netminder to the ball, eventually finding Perich open, setting him up for the game’s final goal and sealing the 2-1 victory.

The win pushes the Wolves back to .500 at 2-2 overall while the Fighting Bees drop to 1-4 on the season. Up next, Stritch will welcome in Northland International University on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sept. 1, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves men’s soccer team fell in the 2009 season opener to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. Opening at home, the Wolves fell by a score of 1-0 to the Warhawks.

The first half was all about stout defense as the two teams combined for just six total shots while playing to a 0-0 score after the first 45 minutes of play. Neither team looked to give the other the edge as the play was physical, leading to 11 combined fouls in the half.

After a tough first half, the two teams would come out with looking to put pressure on the other with the Warhawks breaking through first. In the 58th minute of play, UW-Whitewater’s Dan Montayne (Mukwonago, Wis.) tallied the game’s lone goal. Heading to the right of the Stritch net, Montayne managed to get the ball over a Wolves’ defender and just over the reach of goalkeeper Max Leblond (Lille, France) to put the ball in the far side of the net.

Down 1-0, the Wolves’ best chance to score came on a crossing play between Gareth Ringrose (Perth, Australia) and Elliot Magnant (Plymouth, Wis.). Heading up the left side of the field, Ringrose booted a centering pass just in front of the opposing goal with enough air under it for a strong header attempt by a streaking Magnant who ended up sending the ball just over the Warhawks’ net.

Despite the loss, the Wolves and Warhawks seemed evenly matched throughout the evening as the shots were 8-7 in favor of UW-Whitewater. Meanwhile, the Wolves held the edge in corner kicks at 10-5.

With the loss, the Wolves fall to 0-1 while the Warhawks move to 1-0. Stritch will hit the road on Saturday for a match against William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Game time is set for an 8:00 p.m. start.
