Wolves Pounded by TrollsTournament loss ends Stritch season
November 3, 2009
Palos Heights, Ill. – Entering the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season play as the lowest seed in the tournament made it difficult for the Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team. Stritch faced first place Trinity Christian University in the quarter finals on Tuesday. The Wolves’ offense couldn’t get anything going in their first post-season match in five years, taking only three total shots, while the Trolls came out firing, using 29 shots to end the Wolves’ season with a 0-8 loss.
Trinity Christian went to work early, quickly taking control. Claire Comerouski (Itasca, Ill.) scored the first goal in only the third minute of play. It seemed Stritch couldn’t stop the Trolls in the first half, as Alyssa Lee (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored three consecutive goals to give TCC a commanding 4-0 lead less than 35 minutes into the first period. It didn’t stop there, however, as Allison Doyle (New Lenox, Ill.) scored twice before half time, giving the Trolls a six goal advantage at the break.
The Stritch defense did a better job in the second half, allowing only seven shots, compared to 22 in the first period. Trinity Christian still managed to put two more goals past keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England). Doyle netted her third goal of the match in the 53rd minute and Kerianne Blaauw (South Holland, Ill.) scored the final goal of the game in the 69th.
The only three shots taken by the Wolves were taken by Lynn Podkomorski (Oak Creek, Wis.), Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Terra Schwalbach (Franklin, Wis.). Only Schwalbach’s shot was on goal.
Weaver earned 11 saves in her final match wearing a Stritch uniform.
The Wolves finished the season with a 3-7 record in the CCAC and 4-15 overall.
Wolves Come Away With Vital WinDefeat of St. Francis ends extended play-off drought
October 27, 2009
Joliet, Ill. – In an intense and physical battle, the Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team found a way to score early and hold off the overly aggressive Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis for the win. The 1-0 victory propels the Wolves into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in five seasons.
Stritch scored their single goal just ten minutes into the match, as Lynn Podkomorski (Oak Creek, Wis.) hit Rhesia Baron (Accrington, England) in the center of the box, just under 20 yards away from the goal. Baron put the shot past Ashley Kekelik (Lansing, Ill.), the St. Francis keeper, for her second goal of the season.
The Wolves controlled the ball through much of the first half, putting constant pressure on the Fighting Saints, and taking eight shots. However, in the second period, St. Francis found a spark, and their energy caused the Wolves to struggle. But the fight in St. Francis quickly turned to frustration, as they found it difficult to deal with the Wolves’ style of play.
Though the Fighting Saints took 12 shots in the second period, they were unable to score, as Amy Weaver earned four saves in the half and Kayla Bares (Belgium, Wis.) and Kari Schramer (Oak Creek, Wis.) were very successful in defending the St. Francis forwards. The speedy Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) seemed to cause the most trouble for the Fighting Saints, as she took away multiple shots, taking the ball from behind St. Francis players.
Five yellow cards, one red card, and 10 fouls accumulated for St. Francis during the second half of the match. The Wolves handled the aggression well, taking the fouls and the ball rather than retaliating. Stritch didn’t make it through unscathed, however, as Kayliegh Horder (Pontrypridd, Wales) received her fifth yellow card of the season. Because of this, the junior captain will not be allowed to play in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday.
St. Francis actually outshot the Wolves 19-14, but Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England) came away with her third shutout of the season, a career-high for the senior, who will take the field at least once more because of Tuesday’s win.
Stritch improves to 4-14 overall and 3-7 in the CCAC with the win. They will play Trinity Christian in Palos Heights, Ill. in the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Stritch Earns Second CCAC Win Offense emerges against Holy Cross
October 24, 2009
Notre Dame, Ind. - The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team found their stride in a 1-0 win over Holy Cross College on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves claimed their second conference win of the season. Stritch outshot the Saints 36-3 in the match-up, putting up their season-high in shots against Holy Cross.
The Wolves were unable to score in the first half, although they did take 18 attempts. It wasn’t until the 76th minute that Stritch got on the board, as Lynn Podkomorski (Oak Creek, Wis.) scored on a pass from Sarah Potochich (New Berlin, Wis.). This was the only goal scored by either team, and ended up as the game winner for the Wolves.
Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Wolves with seven shot attempts, while Rhesia Baron (Accrington, England) took six. Keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England) received more help from her defense than she has all year, earning only one save in the game.
Stritch improves to 3-14 overall and 2-7 in the CCAC with the win. They close out their regular season schedule on Tuesday, October 27, as they face the University St. Francis on the road. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
Stritch Can’t Break Through Against Eagles
Weaver saves 13 on Senior Day
October 17, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – Though the Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team was able to keep the Robert Morris Eagles in their sights during the first half, a strong second period by the Eagles made the match-up a one-sided affair. Senior, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England) was honored at her final home game as a Stritch Wolf, and made 13 saves during the match. But the Eagles’ offensive charge couldn’t be held back, as the Wolves fell 0-5.
Robert Morris scored their first and only goal of the first period around 21 minutes into play, as Bruna Dos Santos (Duartina, Brazil) sent a cross from the right side to a waiting Gifty Appiah (Takoradi, Ghana), who scored with a low shot just out of Weaver’s reach. This was the only successful shot for the Eagles in the half, though they managed to take 15. Weaver earned eight saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Though it looked as though the Wolves may have a shot entering the second period down by only one goal, it was not long before the Eagles began to run away with the win. Just ten minutes into the half, Dos Santos set up another teammate for a goal. This time it was Ilana Milkez (Bogata, Columbia) who put her shot past Weaver to give RMC a 2-0 lead. Less than five minutes later Monica Barrera (Rockford, Ill.) received a pass from Appiah before putting a low shot into the back of the net for the Eagles.
Robert Morris would go on to score twice more to earn their 5-0 victory. The fourth goal of the day came on a high cross from Anne Meshes (Rockford, Ill.), which Patricia Nogueira (Araraquara, Brazil) used to score. The final goal came on a great shot by Dos Santos, who sent the ball high into the net, just over the outstretched hands of a jumping Weaver.
Stritch offense continued to struggle, getting only five shot opportunities throughout the game. Sarah Potochich (New Berlin, Wis.) contributed two shots, while Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.), Kari Schramer (Oak Creek, Wis.), and Brittney Klump (Oak Creek, Wis.) each added one.
The Wolves fall to 2-14 with the loss. They return to conference play on October 24, 2009, as they travel to face Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m.

Palos Heights, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team couldn’t get any offense going against the Trinity Christian Trolls on Thursday. The Wolves fell 4-0 while being outshot 30-2 in the match.
Trinity Christian scored three times on 13 shots in the first period. Allison Doyle (New Lenox, Ill.), Trisha Airth (Upland, Cal.), and Claire Comerouski (Itasca, Ill.) each put on past Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England), who only earned three saves in the half. Comerouski scored on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.
Weaver was able to come back strong in the second half, earning 12 saves and giving up only one goal to Carly Comerouski (Itasca, Ill.). The Wolves took only one shot in each period, one each by Lynn Podkororski (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Rhesia Baron (Accrington, England). Weaver finished the game with 15 saves.
Stritch falls to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the CCAC with the loss. They return home on Saturday to face Trinity International University at 12:00 p.m. at Uihlein Soccer Park.

October 3, 2009
Bourbonnais, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team couldn’t stop Olivet Nazarene University’s offense on Saturday. The Tigers took control almost immediately and never let go, beating the Wolves 8-0.
Olivet took 19 shots in each half, compared to the Wolves’ one, which was taken by defender, Lynn Podkoroski (Oak Creek, Wis.). The first goal for the Tigers came less than two minutes into play as Cara Sunberg (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot at an open net. Olivet scored twice more in the first period. Abbey Palmer (Circleville, Oh.) scored one of her three goals in the 26th minute and Katrina Holm (Antioch, Ill.) put away the ball after she broke away from Stritch defenders.
The Tigers continued to dominate in the second period, as Janel Schmitt (Geneva, Ill.), Devin Johnston (Bloomingdale, Ill.), and Meghan Pipal (Wheaton, Ill.) all scored unassisted goals. Stritch goal keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England) left the game after giving up six goals and saving 11 shots. Heather Mc Glothlin (Bloomington, Ind.) took over for her, but Olivet’s offense didn’t let up. Palmer scored twice more for the Tigers before the end of the match on passes from Jessica Jones (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Katie Dirkse (Carol Stream, Ill.).

Wolves Fall in Defensive ShowdownStritch Can’t Keep Momentum
September 30, 2009
Renssellaer, Ind. – The Cardinal Stritch University Wolves women’s soccer team couldn’t find a way to score in a tight battle against Saint Joseph’s College. The two teams combined for only 11 shots in the match, with the Pumas coming out on top, 1-0.
The game remained scoreless until Stephanie Weithop (St. Louis, Mo.) drove up the middle, past Stritch defenders to put the ball into the back of the net at the 73:28 mark. This was the only successful drive for either team, and ended up to be the game winner for the Pumas.
Stritch Keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England), posted four saves in the game. The Wolves only managed to get off three shots, coming from Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.), Rhesia Baron (Accrington, England), and Sarah Potochich (New Berlin, Wis.).

Cougars Topple WolvesStritch women’s soccer falls to St. Xavier
Sept. 26, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – A two-goal deficit was too much to overcome as the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves women’s soccer team fell to the St. Xavier University Cougars in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) soccer match. The Wolves fell to the Cougars by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
With play relatively even in the opening minutes, it would be the Cougars that would strike first. With the ball down by the Stritch goal, one of Wolves was called for a handball inside the goal box, calling for a penalty shot to be taken by the Cougars. SXU made good on the scoring opportunity as Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill.) put the ball into the left side of the Stritch goal, past goalkeeper Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England), for the 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the half.
Despite being down early, the Stritch defense didn’t give in as the St. Xavier offense continually tested them during the opening period. The Cougars were able to get off 11 shots as only five of them were able to make it on net.
Entering the second period of play, the Wolves would yield one more goal in the match as SXU’s Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill.) was able to notch a goal past Weaver with an assist from Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill.). Down 2-0, the Wolves would be unable to generate any offense as Stritch was outshot in the game by a total of 20-6. Of the six total shots, Stritch was able to get just three of them on net in the match.
With the loss, the Wolves now drop to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the CCAC. The victory improves the Cougars to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Stritch will be in action again on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as they’ll face Calumet St. Joseph down in Whiting, Ind. The match is set to take place at 4:00 p.m.

September 23, 2009
Chicago, Ill. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team couldn’t find much offense against the Illinois Technical Institute on Wednesday. The Scarlet Hawks outshot the Wolves 21-5 in their 4-0 victory over Stritch.
IIT scored three goals in the first half, the first on a pass from Grace Durbin (Tusla, Okl.) to the corner of the goal, which was put in by Mary McCabe (Albuquerque, NM). Erica Delgado (Chicago, Ill.) took the ball in unassisted from the left and shot high into the right corner of the net for the second goal of the game. The Scarlet Hawks extended their lead to three on a header by McCabe from Delgado.

Stitch Gets Big Win
Wolves’ offense emerges
September 15, 2009
Dunbar, Wis. - The Cardinal Stritch University women's soccer team clinched their first win of the season on Tuesday, over Northland International University by a score of 2-1.
The Wolves came out strong in the opening period, possessing the ball and pressing the back line of the Pioneers. Stritch patiently worked the ball through the midfield and across the back line, waiting for the right opportunity to strike, and contained the few counter attacks by the Pioneers, to hold the score at 0. It wasn't until Aimee Puttock (Whalley, England) entered the game that the Wolves were able to lead. Puttock, a freshman, has battled injury all season but proven her potential, scoring in two of the three matches she has played in this season. With just seconds remaining in the half, she crossed the ball across the face of the net to Jessica Brown (Johnson Creek, Wis.) at the far post. Brown was able to use the ball for her first goal of the season, placing it in the far corner of the net and giving Stritch a one goal advantage in the half.
The Wolves, unsatisfied with the small lead, took the field with intensity and came out shooting. They finished the match with 15 shots on goal, while multiple other attempts were blocked by Pioneer defenders. However, before Stritch could score, two hard tackles by the Pioneers took out both of the Wolves most experienced defenders, as Kayleigh Horder (Pontrypridd, Wales) and Kayla Bares (Belgium, Wis.) left the game with injuries. Northland International’s attack resulted in a corner kick, which the Pioneers capitalized upon in the 66th minute to tie the match. Horder and Bares both reentered the match shortly after.
It didn't take the Wolves long to regain the lead as Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) sent a long cross to Jaclyn Barberena (Oak Creek, Wis.) just minutes after the Pioneers tied the match. The freshman knocked in the winning goal for Stritch.
Senior keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England) finished the game with 9 saves.
The Wolves improve to 1-6 with the win. Their next match will take place on September 23 at 7:00 p.m. Stritch will travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on the Illinois Institute of Technology in their first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match of the year.
Sept. 6, 2009
Clinton, Iowa – In a game filled with aggression, fouls, and yellow cards, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves couldn’t hold on to a one goal first half lead, and fell to Ashford University, 3-1, giving up three unanswered goals in the second period. The Saints took advantage of the Wolves limited offense, outshooting Stritch, 20-3.
Aimee Puttock (Whalley, England) gave the Wolves an advantage early, scoring on a ball from Britney Klump (Oak Creek, Wis.) less than three minutes into the match. Neither team managed to put the ball into the back of the net for the remainder of the half.
The Saints dominated after half time, taking the lead on two consecutive goals by Amanda Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The first of the two was assisted by Makenzie Mueller (Sycamore, Ill.) and Cassandra Broderick (Bettendorf, Iowa), while Campos put the second by Stritch goalie, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England), on her own. Abbye Garcia (Stillman Valley, Ill.) scored the last goal of the night with just over seven minutes left in the game. Garcia was assisted by Kate Sarrazin (Iowa City, Iowa).
The match was littered with more than shots, as Ashford racked up 12 fouls and four yellow cards. Stritch also struggled to keep their composure. Though only committing six fouls, the Wolves also had four yellows, including two by captain Kayleigh Horder (Pontrypridd, Wales), which resulted in a red card for the junior.
Weaver gave up three goals, and earned ten saves. Klump took two of the Wolves’ three shots, besides recording an assist on Puttock’s goal.
The Wolves fall to 0-4 with the loss against the Saints. Stritch will play their next two matches at home. They are scheduled to face Bethel College next Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 13, the Wolves will take on Viterbo University at 12:00 p.m.
Wolves Not Enough for William PennStritch finds offensive spark
September 5, 2009
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team made big strides in offensive improvement on Saturday in a match against William Penn University, scoring the first two goals of the season to keep the Statesmen in sight until late in the game. Goals by Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Aimee Puttock (Whalley, England) left the game tied at two until Melissa Wink (Brookfield, Ill.) scored the game winner for William Penn in the 78th minute. Unable to answer for a third time, the Wolves fell 3-2.
Wink also scored the first goal of the match, receiving a ball from Stephanie Deck (Plain City, Ut.) 25 minutes into the first half. Freshman, Puttock, scored in the last seconds of the period, beating goal keeper, Katie Burnett, unassisted, to ensure a level playing field in the second half. The goal was the first of Puttock’s career at Stritch.
The Statesmen took the lead for a second time, scoring at the 68 minute mark as Hillary Gallego (Arlington, Tex.) found Julieth Tellez (Mendota, Ill.), who put a shot past Wolves keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England). Stritch responded immediately, however, on a quick goal from Hernandez. She was assisted by junior Kaitlin Luangrath (West Bend, Wis), who along with Hernandez, earned her first points of the season.
The game remained tight, but it was the Statesmen who were able to break away on Wink’s late goal, ensuring the win for William Penn.
The Wolves offense saw huge improvement from their first two games, taking nine shots in the match, six of which were on goal. Britney Klump (Oak Creek, Wis.) took four of the shots, while Hernandez attempted two. Each Puttock, Rhesia Barron (Lancashire, England), and Ashley Billo (Oak Creek, Wis.) shot once. While Stritch upped their opportunities, taking seven more shots than their first two games combined, they were still outshot 2-1 by the Statesmen.
Weaver gave up three goals, while earning 10 saves. She falls to 0-3 in the net.
The Wolves drop to 0-3 with the loss. They are scheduled to face Ashford University on Sunday, September 6, at 5:00 p.m.
Stritch Can’t Hold Off Dragons
Wolves’ offense continues to struggle
Aug. 29, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team showed a strong defensive front during the first half of a match against the Minnesota State University – Moorhead, but the back line couldn’t hold on as Stritch struggled to get any offense going. The Dragons came out shooting in the second half, taking the match 3-0 over the Wolves.
The first goal was scored five minutes into the second period, as Moorhead’s Abby Kettler (St. Joseph, Min.) sent a great ball into the box, finding Jordyn Wallenborn (Camas, Wash.) for the header past a diving Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England). At the 71 minute mark Kettler beat two defenders before a well placed ball soared over Weaver’s hands into the back of the net. The Dragon’s last goal came only minutes later when Shenae Morical (Garfield, Min.) came from the left side, dribbled past two Wolves’ defenders and scored as Weaver charged to meet her.
The real excitement of the match began around the 65:00 mark, as frustration began to show. Stritch didn’t get a shot off during the match, as the Dragons got very aggressive on the defensive end. Forward, Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) missed multiple shot opportunities, as she was fouled during the breakaways.
Both teams started to get physical in the second half, leading to a short lived altercation between Dragon’s forward, Katherine Adams (Circle Pines, Min.) and Stritch defender, Jessica Brown (Johnson Creek, Wis.). Kayleigh Horder (Pontrypridd, Wales), known to have an aggressive streak on the field, also got involved. The three players each received a yellow card. Later in the match, Jena Reed (Lino Lakes, Min.) and Ashley Gallegos (Fontana, Cal.), of Moorhead were also given yellow cards due to overly aggressive play.
Stritch struggled once again to find scoring opportunities. They allowed the Dragons 21 shots and three goals. Keeper, Weaver, recorded eight saves.
The Wolves fall to 0-2 after the loss. They will travel to Iowa next weekend for two games. On Sept. 5, at 6:00 p.m. Stritch is slated to face William Penn University. They follow with a Sunday match against Ashford University at 5:00 p.m.
Wolves Fall to Beavers in Home Opener
Stritch can’t find offensive spark
Aug. 28, 2009
Milwaukee, Wis. – The Cardinal Stritch University women’s soccer team opened their season at home on Friday against Bemidji State University. The Wolves couldn’t get anything going offensively, taking only two shots the entire match. The Beavers put constant pressure on the Wolves back line, giving them an overwhelming 7-0 victory.
For the first 27 minutes of play it looked as though the Wolves defense may hold up against the strong Beaver forwards. However, the offense soon broke through for Bemidji. Stritch could do little to stop the Beavers after they netted their first goal of the day. At the 27:15 minute mark Brianna Duff (Ramsey, Minn.) hit Kari McAllen (Fargo, ND) for her first goal of the season. Duff would continue to cause problems for the Wolves, assisting Analey Skog (St. Francis, Minn.) for another only five minutes later, and going on to score two goals herself.
Skog also put two into the back of the net, scoring her second after a rebound off of Stritch goal keeper, Amy Weaver (Barnoldswick, England). Also scoring in the second half were Kristen Erickson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Bri Scanlan (East Grand Forks, Minn.), both sophomore midfielders.
The only two shots attempted by the Wolves came from Brenda Hernandez (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Rhesia Baron (Lancashire, England).
Weaver gave up seven goals in the match, but earned 13 saves, many on breakaway shots taken by the Beavers.
The Wolves fall to 0-1 after the opening loss. They face Minnesota State University – Moorhead on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Uihlein Soccer Park. The game is set begin at 7:00 p.m.
