In the Franciscan tradition, service is motivated by the example of Jesus washing the feet of his apostles. Inspired by the life of Christ in the Gospels, St. Francis set about doing good and serving the needs of others.
Campus Ministry likewise offers opportunities for service as an expression of faith and love that flows from deep prayer and pondering the mystery of God with us in the lives of those in need. Therefore, a component of reflection and processing is an essential part of our service experiences.
For the last 26 years, students and staff have carried hot meals downtown to feed the hungry on the first Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Individuals can sign up for this truly life-changing experience in the breezeway at the Campus Ministry bulletin board. Students often head south with hammers in their hands to build houses with people who cannot afford them but can work to earn them. The students do fund raising for this trip and they form a community with reflections and sharing as they grow personally and spiritually.
