Security / Safety

The Cardinal Stritch University Department of Security is vitally concerned with and takes an active role in facilitating the personal safety, security and well-being of all members of the Stritch community, as well as providing for the protection of University assets. With the support of other departments, there is a continuing effort to keep this campus safe and secure.

We hope students will read and use the information presented here to help foster a safe environment for everyone at Stritch. Additionally, other informative documents on date rape, personal safety, campus safety and other informative subjects are available upon request from the Department of Security or Student Development office.

How to Report Campus Crimes and Emergencies

The Department of Security operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The department consists of the director and a full staff of security officers.

Although security officers are not authorized to make arrests, the Department of Security maintains a working relationship with the police departments of the Village of Fox Point and the City of Glendale which, in turn, aid the University in all criminal investigations.

Students should not hesitate to contact any member of the Department of Security regarding any matter related to safety and/or security. They will do their utmost to assist in any way.

Reporting Emergencies

In the event of any emergency, it is important to call immediately.  If police, fire or rescue personnel are required to respond, they should be called first and then a call should be placed to campus security.

                                                      Campus Phone                                  Any Other Phone

Police Department                          9-911                                                     911

Fire Department                              9-911                                                     911

Main Campus Security                   ext. 4220  (main campus)                      (414) 410-4220

Security-City Center only              (414) 235-7897                                    (414) 235-7897

If the main campus security phone cannot receive a call, the call automatically goes to the pager. If this occurs, wait for the verbal prompt, then put in your phone number, followed by the # sign. You will receive a phone call back. Security has access to key phone numbers for crisis team, and will alert others as appropriate.

A crisis communications plan is in place that allows for expedient communication in a crisis. Stritch subscribes to e2campus, a notification system that  alerts registered users via text messaging and e-mail. All students, faculty, and staff are asked to register with this service. Users can register by logging onto http://www.e2campus.com/my/stritch/ and providing the pertinent information. In the event of an emergency requiring quick communication, this system will be utilized to provide users with important information such as evacuation, closings, sheltering in place, etc. While these will be done with the most immediate knowledge of the situation available, they should not replace one’s personal judgment if the situation changes rapidly.

Responding to Crime

Each incident reported is investigated by a member of the Department of Security and/or a police officer. Every effort is made to identify and prosecute criminals, recover stolen property and encourage restitution, when possible.

Persons with knowledge of crime in or near the main campus may also report anonymous crime tips to North Shore Crime Stoppers by calling (414) 962-4258. The group pays cash rewards up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and charging of suspects involved in crimes committed in the North Shore. Information on this group can be obtained from the Department of Security or from posters on campus.

Reporting at other Classroom Sites

To report any criminal activity, call 911 or the police department having legal jurisdiction for that area. Report all incidents, as well as any suspicious activity, to your instructor and the director of academic counseling or site manager at your regional site.

Local Crime Statistics

The director of security attends a monthly Metro Investigators Meeting, which gives information on criminal activity occurring in Fox Point, Glendale and other southeast Wisconsin police jurisdictions. Any information that may be used to alert students to problems or deter criminal activity on campus will be relayed to the campus community. The Department of Security encourages all members of the University community to report all criminal activity as well as any incident that may jeopardize personal well-being.

Fliers and e-mails are used to disseminate any crime alerts or information that may help deter crime or alert the University community of any potential safety or security problems.

Annual Crime Statistics

Federal law requires each university to collect information concerning campus crime statistics, campus security policies and campus crime prevention programs. The law also requires each institution to make reports to the campus community on crimes that are reported to campus security or local police agencies and are considered to be a threat to students and employees, in a manner that will aid in the prevention of similar occurrences.

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act ("The Clery Act"), Public Law 105-244, requires the release, to current and prospective students and employees, of statistics for: selected criminal incidents, arrests for specified crimes, and University disciplinary action taken for specified violations on campus.

* Note: As of the 1999 calendar year, The Clery Act requires, in addition to the arrest data reported here, the release of statistics for persons not included in the arrest data who were referred for University disciplinary action for liquor law violations, drug policy violations, or weapons policy violations.

The Clery Act further requires an institution that maintains a campus police or a campus security department to maintain a written, easily understood daily crime log that records, by the date the crime was reported, any crime that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University, and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus, and was reported to the security department or local police. This log must include:

  1. The nature, date, time, and general location of each crime; and

  2. The disposition of the complaint, if known.

This crime log for the most recent 60-day period is open for public inspection during normal University business hours. Any portion of the log older than 60 days is available within two business days of a request for public inspection. Contact Security at (414) 410-4221 for public inspection.
