Teach Abroad Programs

Student teaching is the culminating experience of the teacher preparation program in the College of Education and Leadership. Undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates may initiate a student teaching placement abroad. Teacher candidates can apply to complete student teaching in another country.

Generally the student teacher will complete a 10-week placement in southeastern Wisconsin and complete a 10-week placement overseas. Because of the planning involved and organization required for a student teaching abroad, students should apply for this opportunity one year prior to the expected student teaching placement. Program duration abroad typically lasts from 10 to 12 weeks depending on the needs of our foreign school partners. We encourage students to fill out an application early in order to allow maximum time to secure the placement abroad.

Because many schools abroad do not follow our school schedule, students may need to complete the placement abroad in a time that exceeds our traditional semester. In this case, the student will receive an incomplete and the grade for student teaching will be posted upon completion of the placement abroad.

Student placements abroad will be determined by Cardinal Stritch University together with our partner universities and based on the following factors:

  1. Candidate’s certification area
  2. Experiences with children in a variety of grade levels
  3. Experiences with children from different socio-economic levels
  4. Experiences with children from a variety of cultures
  5. Experiences with children with varying degrees of academic, social and emotional abilities
  6. Candidate's country of preference

Students interested in a teaching placement abroad should initially contact the College of Education and Leadership and submit a teach abroad program application to the Office of Student Placements.
