The Kellner Family Literacy Center
Since 1943, the Kellner Family Literacy Center has been transforming generations of K-12 students into effective, independent learners by applying evidence-based instruction tailored to their strengths, needs and ongoing progress. The Kellner Family Literacy Center offers comprehensive literacy and math assessment and intervention services for students in grades K-12 from public, charter or choice schools. Home-schooled children are also eligible for the intervention programs.

Individualized literacy intervention
Our literacy program provides explicit and systematic individualized intervention plans developed from evidence-based best practices in reading for phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We also provide instruction in spelling, writing and study skills. The intervention plan addresses the strengths, needs and interests of each student and is designed to inspire self-confidence, motivation and lifelong learning.

Individualized math intervention
Our math program provides explicit and systematic individualized instruction in basic math skills and problem solving as well as offering programs for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. As in our literacy program, the math intervention plan addresses the strengths, needs and interests of each student and is designed to inspire self-confidence, motivation and lifelong learning.
ACT Prep
Individualized ACT preparation can be incorporated into the literacy and math intervention programs for the areas of reading, English, writing, and math. Students build their skills in the areas of their needs and develop the strategies necessary to perform successfully on the ACT tests. To add ACT preparation to your child’s literacy or math program, complete the standard program registration forms.

Ongoing assessments for individualized plans
All new students in the literacy and math programs are required to have a comprehensive literacy or math evaluation. The results from the assessments are used to develop the individualized instructional plan that reflects the student’s strengths, needs, and interests. Through ongoing assessment at the end of each semester, we are able to modify our intervention plan based on a student’s progress. Continuous monitoring also provides opportunities for family and school communication and collaboration, making it easier for students to transfer skills back to the school setting. Families receive comprehensive reports after each assessment period.
Additional Evaluation Services
Comprehension literacy and math evaluations are also available to families who would like to know more about their children’s strengths and needs without enrolling in an intervention program. After the evaluation, a report is provided with the assessment results. Consultation is provided to assist families in understanding their children’s assessment results and the recommendations for instruction. To initiate testing, please complete the Request for Evaluation Form or call the Kellner Family Literacy Center.

Standard Program
In the Standard literacy or math programs, students receive the initial evaluation and instruction by experienced Master Instructors with reading certification, master’s degrees, or Ph.D.’s in the areas of education, literacy, math, or special education. This is a full-tuition program.
Practicum Program
Cardinal Stritch University graduate students, teachers working on their Wisconsin reading certification, perform the initial evaluation and provide the instruction under the supervision of experienced Master Instructors and a university faculty member. Twelve 90-minute lessons are delivered during each semester. The Practicum Program is open to students who qualify for free or reduced meals according to Federal Guidelines; the tuition is substantially reduced. Openings in this program are limited to the number of graduate students enrolled in the course. This program only provides literacy intervention.
