Dreamers Welcome receives 2020 Student Activist Award

Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies

The Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (WIPCS) announced that Dreamers Welcome, a Stritch student organization, has received a 2020 Student Activist Award. The award is presented annually to "Wisconsin college or university students who have made an outstanding contribution to activism related to peace and justice issues.”

Dreamers Welcome was nominated by Stritch Associate English Professor Dr. Sarah Foust Vinson and Assistant Foreign Language Professor Marilyn Jones. In their nomination letter, they commended Dreamers Welcome for creating a more just and caring community by promoting cultural awareness and discussions around issues of diversity and inclusion, and particularly noted the group's advocacy for undocumented, DACAmented and international students.

Dreamers Welcome is a student-led group seeking to advocate for the rights of undocumented students by fostering an environment that promotes connections between them and resources at Stritch. Members firmly believe that having a group like this at Stritch is of dire importance; to give students a voice, a space and the necessary informational resources to aid them in their pursuit of personal and academic success.

Dreamers Welcome will be recognized at the WIPCS student conference in April.

About the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies:

WIPCS is a unique and vital consortium of private and public colleges and universities dedicated to enriching academic and public discourse on issues of peace and conflict. The Institute is non-partisan and encourages debate and discussion of multiple perspectives, not only of foreign policy issues and global areas of conflict, but also of intercultural communication, gender relations, and environmental sustainability. As institutions seek to internationalize and/or globalize their curricula and co-curricular programs, the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (WIPCS) is a statewide resource available to help.
