Spanish Language Interpretation and Translation

The demand for qualified and certified interpreters and translators is growing at a remarkable pace, both nationally and worldwide. A simple knowledge of equivalents between languages will not suffice for this professional work. Competent interpreters and translators must demonstrate a mastery of cultural understanding, theoretical knowledge, ethical competency and a specific, industry informed set of skills.

The rigorous Interpretation and Translation Graduate Certificate is designed to provide bilingual adults, who may or may not already work in the professional field of interpretation and translation, with fundamental language skills, problem-solving techniques and specialized training required to be highly-competent professionals in this growing field. Our graduates are trained to render accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation and translation services in business, finance, medical, legal, educational and literary fields.

This 12-credit (4 class) certificate can be completed within one academic year, taking one eight-week course at a time. Additionally, students have the option to simply take one or two classes to gain specific skills depending on their individual needs and interests. The flexibility of this convenient, fully online program allows students to reside anywhere while pursuing their professional goals.

Career Outcomes

Our program enhances our graduates’ career options and opportunities of passing certification exams such as those provided by American Translators Association (ATA), the Wisconsin Court System, and health care associations and agencies. Students who complete the program can go on to own and operate interpretation or translation agencies. They can also become interpreters in hospitals, clinics and other health care settings, work for private companies in information technology, marketing and manufacturing, serve in the public sector and educational settings, or become freelance translators. The certificate increases the marketability of professionals in careers such as psychology, education, community leadership, nursing and many others.

U.S. Department of Labor Statistics

Employment growth reflects increasing globalization and a more diverse U.S. population, which is expected to require more interpreters and translators.

Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Interpreters and translators hold approximately 68,200 jobs. The largest employers of interpreters and translators are:

  • Professional, scientific, and technical services: 30%
