RL 564 Overview
This course is designed to examine literacy assessments and instruction in phonological awareness, word recognition (sight words and phonics), and spelling/writing. As a part of this study students are introduced to topics in the field related to the developmental stages of word recognition for emergent readers through advanced readers. Additionally, this course is designed to examine informal and formal literacy assessments. Students are introduced to an Informal Reading Inventory (IRI) and two standardized (norm-referenced) assessments; in addition, students will be taught how to administer assessments, score them, interpret them, and make appropriate instructional recommendations based on the results. Research and theory will be examined and closely tied to classroom assessment and instruction.
