RL 564 Overview

This course is designed to examine literacy assessments and instruction in phonological awareness, word recognition (sight words and phonics), fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and spelling/writing. Students are introduced to topics in literacy related to the developmental stages of word recognition for emergent readers through advanced readers. Additionally, this course is designed to examine informal and formal literacy assessments. Students are introduced to an Informal Reading Inventory (IRI) and standardized (norm-referenced) assessments. Students will learn how to administer, score and interpret assessments and make appropriate instructional recommendations based on the results. Research and theory will be examined and closely tied to classroom assessment and instruction for pupils who are performing at a wide range of ability levels, including pupils with specific learning disabilities or dyslexia in literacy.
